Football Walk Through: Week 8 of 11

October 3, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

We've seen a truncated preview the last two weeks of how region play may stack up throughout conferences in the East Valley.

Enough evidence to make some conclusions? Sure.  Let's get to it and view the week's slate involving East Valley schools:

WEEK 8 of 11 EAST VALLEY GAMES

Thursday October 6: 3A -- American Leadership (6-1) vs. Joy Christian (0-5) at North Canyon HS; Benjamin Franklin (6-1) at Safford (3-4). Friday October 7: 6A -- Basha (2-5) at Brophy (7-0); Desert Ridge (5-1) at Corona del Sol (3-3), Desert Vista (2-4) at Gilbert (1-5), Mountain Pointe (6-0) at Highland (2-4), Chandler (5-2) at Perry (6-0), Mesa Mtn. View (3-3) at Red Mountain (2-4), Mesa (3-4) at Skyline (6-1), Dobson (4-2) at Westwood (2-5). 5A -- Raymond Kellis (5-1) at McClintock (3-3), Campo Verde (6-1) at Queen Creek (6-1), Vista Grande (2-4) at Williams Field (7-0), Poston Butte (3-3) at Flowing Wells (3-3). 4A -- Higley (5-1) at Casa Grande (4-2), Combs (0-6) at Cortez (2-5), Cactus Shadows (5-1) at Marcos de Niza (4-2), Seton Catholic (4-2) at Tempe (3-4), Apache Junction (2-4) at Dysart (5-1). 3A -- Fountain Hills (2-4) at Casteel (5-1), Valley Christian (1-5) at North Pointe Prep (0-6). 2A -- Gilbert Christian (3-3) at Bourgade (2-4), Phoenix Christian (5-1) at Tempe Prep (5-1). Saturday October 8: 2A -- Chandler Prep (6-1) at Kingman Academy (3-3). Byes -- Mesquite and San Tan Foothills.

THIS AND THAT: Unbeaten Perry is the school clouding region supremacy in the 6A Premier Region. Is this the year a fast start by the Pumas --  four-, five-, or six-game winning streak -- leads to more than a like-losing streak as the season closes? Perry's offense has been potent with either Brock Purdy or D'Shayne James at quarterback. Purdy, the incumbent, has been in the driver's seat prolifically for three games and James has provided extra offense shifting to receiver. It's Perry's final four opponents that's the rub -- Chandler, Brophy Prep, Hamilton and Basha. Perry began playing a big-school schedule in 2011 and its record against the afroementioned quartet is 1-13. The only win was in 2011 against Basha. Hamilton and Chandler aren't dominating foes like they have in the past and lack the feel of invincibility. Brophy is also undefeated and appears to have the best defense in the region. Look for a shootout between Perry and Chandler this week. The Pumas need one of their next  three games to make believers out of the masses.... Skyline and Red Mountain have positioned themselves for supremacy in the 6A East Valley Region after rocking region opponents Mountain View and Dobson, respectively, last week. Skyline shrugged off its only loss to Hamilton in a big way (30-0 over MTV). Skyline won't leave campus for a game the rest of the season with three home games and a bye this month. Red Mountain is a on a tear, with four decisive wins after two opening defeats. Mountain View has dropped three games in a row after a 3-0 start, but that's fathomable given the losses are to Mountain Pointe, Brophy and Skyline. Mountain View could help itself immensely beating Red Mountain this week in the Battle on Brown Road. Mesa High gets a chance to speak its mind against Skyline after winning its region opener.....Williams Field and Queen Creek demonstrated they are the most well-rounded teams in the 5A San Tan Region with convincing wins over Campo Verde and Mesquite, respectively, the past two weeks. Campo Verde and Mesquite don't have the offensive weapons of the other two and not nearly the big-play capability.....Casa Grande surprised Marcos de Niza two weeks ago in the 4A Desert Sky Region, serving notice to current and now presumed region favorite, Higley. Higley's offense has been corrales only by Saguaro. A shoutout to Seton Catholic, who has bounced back some from last year's 2-8 mark with a 4-2 record to date. The Sentinels, however, finish up with their region foes the last four weeks -- Tempe, High, Marcos de Niza, Casa Grande and Higley.... American Leadership is the leader in the 3A Central Region and with last week's win over Florence and the season-opening and region-opening triumph over Benjamin Franklin is in the driver's seat. Those are the only teams threatening ALA's bid at a region title, dulled by ALA owning the tie-breaker vs. each.....Finally there is the 2A Metro that sports a matchup that likely determines who wins the region -- Phoenix Christian-Tempe Prep. Phoenix Christian hasn't been relevant much this decade in football. A 4-1 start plus added depth last week via a truckload of transfers mostly from Joy Christian now eligible, PC wants to be more than back on the radar.
