Volleyball: Desert Vista upends Highland

October 4, 2016 by Ariana Vallejo, Arizona State University

The Phoenix Desert Vista girls volleyball team beat Gilbert Highland in a Class 6A Central Region match Tuesday with the help of 14 kills from Hailey Dirrigl.

Although Dirrigl had the most kills, without her team working together on the court, Desert Vista wouldn't have swept the Hawks, 25-17, 25-15, 25-14, on the road. Desert Vista's Kalen Owes' 11 kills hellped rally the team as it took the lead against Highland throughout the match.

Junior middle blocker Abigail Hansen contributed 10 kills for Desert Vista.

“What has improved for the team most this season is the chemistry,” Desert Vista coach Molly West said. “We’re finding a better rhythm, and I think there are people in the lineup right now that are just working well together.”

Desert Vista's consistency also stood out during the entire match, which might bode well for the team in the future.

Desert Vista improved its record to 13-13 and will play Corona del Sol Tuesday at home.

“Being able to come together and being able to win with your team. Having everyone involved and cheering for each other," Dirrigl, a senior, said. "I think that’s what’s exciting about the match.”
