Seton Catholic's girls volleyball is taking care of the business at hand -- wrapping up a region title.

The Sentinels moved within a win of taking the 4A Desert Sky Region title on Thursday afternoon with a sweep of Marcos de Niza by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-15 at Marcos de Niza.

Seton (19-10 overall and 6-0 in its region) entered the day ranked No. 7 in 4A. It  should hold on to a top 8 ranking/seeding for the state tournament that opens in three weeks with only two matches left, including one with Higley on Tuesday that could nail down the region for the Sentinels.

Seton coach Patti Schoenhardt has enjoyed mixing and matching lineups due in part at times to injury and to having a balanced squad in terms of ability.

"It's a nice problem to have and I have confidence in all of them," Schoenhardt said. "We have good chemisty, and that's important."

The sweep of Marcos de Niza was the second for Seton over the Padres in the last three days. There was balance on the attack all afternoon for the Sentiinels except for the final 10 points for Seton in the final set.

Senior outside hitter Mary Grace Blaser stepped up with three kills and served four points in that stretch. Her ace closed the match. Blaser finished with 12 kills (unofficially) to lead the Sentinels. Emily Mangone was next with six and four others had between three and five. Nine of Seton's final 10 points came via kill or ace. to break open a tight set (15-14 lead for Seton at that point). Seton was led on the defensive side by senior libero Grace Milhone and freshman setter Delaney Shearon.

The work ahead for Seton, besides securing the region title, is beating the top teams in 4A it has faced thus far who are ahead of it. Seton has losses to No. 1 Flagstaff, No. 2 Cactus Shadows, No. 4 Sunrise Mountain and No. 6 Canyon del Oro, Those are teams the Sentinels likely will face should they reach the quarterfinals or better. Most of those matches took place the first month of the season. The postseason will be check-up time.

"I definitely think we'll be better the next time we face one of them," Schoenhardt said. "We just need to stay humble, and keep doing what we're doing,"

Marcos de Niza dropped to 5-15 for the season and is 3-3 in the region. The Padres have four matches left, but postseason is likely out of the question. MDN was No. 27 in 4A prior to the match. Sixteen teams qualify for the playoffs.

Sophomore middle Elyse Olson led Marcos de Niza unofficially with seven kills.
