6A SOUTHERN REGION

No. 19 Kofa (14-4 overall, 4-0 in region), No. 34 Cibola (6-11, 2-2), No. 35 Sunnyside (6-11, 1-3) and No. 12 Rincon/University (11-5, 4-0) all advance to the Southern Region Tournament to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Rincon High School.  The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the state playoffs.

As of today, Cibola and Sunnyside need to win the tournament to qualify for the state tournament while Kofa and Rincon should both advance to the conference play-in tournament regardless of the outcome.

5A SOUTHERN REGION

No. 2 Sahuaro (14-1, 7-0) beat No. 4 Ironwood Ridge (12-4, 5-3) on Thursday night to claim the region championship. The Cougars won 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 25-17).

As it stands now, both teams should advance directly to the 16-team state bracket. No. 6 Cienega (11-5, 3-4) is in a similar situation. No. 15 Marana Mountain View (7-8, 2-5) should qualify for the play-in tournament. No. 20 Buena (5-10, 1-6) is also close to qualifying for the play-in tournament.

5A SOUTH REGION

No. 27 Poston Butte (10-5, 6-1) beat No. 21 Marana (9-7, 6-1) Thursday night to draw even with the Tigers in the region standings. Both squads still have a match with No. 38 Desert View (5-10, 1-5) remaining. If both teams beat Desert View, then the region title will be decided based on the tiebreaker:

1.Head to Head in Region/Section Games

2.Conference/Division Win Percentage

3.Overall Win Percentage

4.Overall Power Ranking

5.Coin Flip if simply to break a tie for seeding

6.Mini playoff if to go into the tournament

The team with the better conference record will get the automatic bid here. Poston Butte needs to win the region to get into the play-in tournament. Marana will be on the edge.

4A KINO REGION

No. 6 Canyon del Oro (12-2, 7-0) can win the region title on Oct. 26 with a win over No.8 Salpointe (11-4, 5-1). If Salpointe wins, then the Lancers will need to beat No. 15 Catalina Foothills the next night to stay even in the region standings with CDO.  This region will, then, also go to a tiebreaker.

There is no “play-in tournament” in the 4A Conference. Both CDO and Salpointe should get into the state playoffs, while Catalina Foothills will be on the edge. No. 17 Nogales (9-6, 1-5) still has a shot an at-large berth.

4A GILA REGION

No. 20 Pueblo (10-4, 5-0) and No. 27 Palo Verde (9-5, 4-1) will meet on Oct. 25. The winner of this region should be the only team to get into the playoffs.

3A SOUTH REGION

No. 11 Sabino (10-4, 9-0) beat No. 8 Tanque Verde (12-2, 7-2) on Thursday night to draw one match closer to the region title. At any rate, both team should make the playoffs because the top two teams in each region makes the 3A Conference tournament.

No. 19 Pusch Ridge (8-7. 6-4) has to win out to get an at-large berth.

2A SOUTH REGION

No. 23 Desert Christian (9-6, 9-0) beat No. 26 San Carlos (9-6, 6-2) on Thursday night. To claim the region championship. The Eagles are in.

2A EAST REGION

No. 7 Thatcher (10-3, 10-0) beat No. 9 Pima (11-4, 9-2) Thursday night to claim the region title. No. 18 Willcox (10-4, 7-4) has to win out to get in the playoffs.

1A SOUTH REGION

No. 4 St. David (13-1, 7-0) won the region title. No. 7 The Gregory School (11-4, 5-2) will play No. 15 Bowie/San Simon (10-3, 6-1) on Oct. 24 for the second automatic qualifier.
