FOOTBALL: Southern Arizona roundup; Cienega on 14-game winstreak

November 5, 2016 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365

6A FOOTBALL FIRST ROUND

No. 11 Tucson lost to No. 6 Hamilton, 47-30

Hamilton won the battle between two schools that would love to have their regular seasons back. Who knows how high of a seed the Badgers would have earned had they not turned the ball over four times in the fourth quarter against Ironwood Ridge?

No. 6 Hamilton will get a rematch against No. 3 Perry on Thursday night. The Pumas killed Hamilton 55-21 two weeks ago.

5A FOOTBALL FIRST ROUND

No. 1 Cienega beat No. 16 Fairfax, 49-14

The Bobcats are 11-0 and riding a 14-game win streak. I would say Cienega is back. The Bobcats will host No. 9 Mesquite in the second round. Mesquite upset No. 8 Marana Mountain View to advance.

No. 3 Ironwood Ridge beat No. 14 Flowing Wells, 50-20

The Caballeros made this a game early on but the Nighthawks steamrolled and will get a rematch against No. 6 Queen Creek next week. The Bulldogs plastered them in Sept. Look for a much closer game this time.

No. 7 Marana beat No. 10 Kellis, 28-21

The Marana dream season continues but No. 2 Williams Field comes next. Why not? Anything is possible.

No. 8 Mountain View lost to No. 9 Mesquite, 21-19

The only upset in the 5A bracket so far. No. 8 vs. No. 9 was close as it should be.

No. 11 Desert View lost to No. 6 Queen Creek, 62-0

The Jaguars just ran out of gas. Difficult to compete with small numbers.  Does not take away from a great season.

4A FOOTBALL FIRST ROUND

No. 4 Salpointe beat No. 13 Canyon del Oro, 10-6

It was a battle of field goal kickers for a while but, once again, Mario Padilla proved to be the difference.

No. 6 Catalina Foothills beat No. 11 Cactus Shadows, 35-31

Rhett Rodriguez threw three touchdowns to engineer a comeback. He finished with 263 yards passing on 12 completions in 18 attempts. He rushed eight times for 66 yards.

No. 16 Amphitheater lost to No. 1 Saguaro, 56-7

Amphi knew a region title would mean a game at Saguaro. The Panthers should be remembered for breaking 12-game losing streak
