Rich Wellbrock needs a new sweater vest. Something in green or vegas gold.

Wellbrock is leaving Desert Edge after a highly successful, seven-year stint as coach there to become the fourth football coach at Basha High in the school's 13-year history. Basha announced the selection of Wellbrock in a press release on Thursday morning.

Wellbrock replaces Gerald Todd, who resigned last month after three seasons. Wellbrock posted a 73-14 record in his tenure at Desert Edge that began in 2010. The Scorpions qualified for the playoffs every year and won at least 10 games six times. They won a state title (2015) and earned a runner-up finish (2012) in that span. Overall, Wellbrock is 89-40 in 11 seasons as a head coach that includes a prior stop at Tolleson.

"There are mixed emotions," Wellbrock said of heading from the westside to the eastside. "I think Desert Edge has become a destination school in the West Valley. I feel good about having been able to help impact so many lives. We were able to catch lightning in a bottle."

Wellbrock heads to a conference and region dominated by his new sister schools. Chandler schools (Hamilton and Chandler) have won nine of the last 14 big-school football titles.

Desert Edge advanced to the semifinals in Wellbrock's first season at the helm in 4A-II, losing in double overtime to eventual champ Thunderbird. The next season the Scorpions settled for a 7-4 record and one-and-done in postseason. In 2012 they reached their first title game - a heartbreaking loss in the final seconds to Queen Creek. Saguaro and Queen Creek blunted title runs the next two years. In 2015 they gained title-game redemption with a late-scoring drive to defeat Paradise Valley.
