Girls soccer: Millennium clinches region title

Westview was spoiling Millennium’s plans early for a ‘W’ on one of the biggest night’s for the Goodyear girls soccer program.

The other challenge for Millennium, to see if it could attract 2,000 fans to its final regular season home match, also was proving elusive. But Westview’s quick forwards and not reaching its fan goal total didn’t dampen the mood of Millennium’s soccer team and the more than 1,400 fans who came out on a cold night.

It was still one of the largest crowds to ever watch a regular season girls high school soccer game in Arizona. But the most important figure for Millennium was the 4-2 victory, clinching the Southwest Region title in the process on Senior Night.

The Goodyear program is experiencing quite a turnaround under second-year coach David Cameron, one of the West Valley’s prominent club soccer coaches. Millennium was 3-12-1 last year but is 14-1-1 overall this year after Thursday’s home win.

“It was an awesome night,” Cameron said. “I’m so happy that Millennium stepped up and said that they were going to show up. The rain scared us a little bit, but they came and it was awesome. Our school is unified behind us. To do this will be an awesome experience and something that the players will remember the rest of their lives. It’s a cool bonding experience for us and the school.”

Last year, Millennium was young and played a tough schedule.

But those players are now flourishing in Cameron’s possession system. One of the players who is really taking off is forward Naomi Aguilar, who recorded a hat trick Thursday.

“We played very well,” Aguilar said. “Things started to pick up once we got the hang of all the runs on the outside and we started checking to the midfield and working together. We also started enjoying the time with all of the fans.”

But Millennium wasn’t the first team to take a bow during the important power point matchup.

It was Westview (9-6-1 overall) and Syria Falkengerg who netted the game's first goal after Falkengerg guided a long free kick to the near post in the 6th minute. That was the wake up call Aguilar and her teammates needed, though.

After a couple of offside calls on Aguilar, the junior patiently worked her way around a defender in the 16th minute to find some open space atop the box and then the top of the net for her first goal. Nearly five minutes later, Aguilar confidently struck the ball with her left foot, getting it past the goalkeeper from about 25 yards out.

But Westview didn’t back down. With four minutes remaining in the first half, freshman Jaiden Marin worked her way in from the left side to tie the game at 2.

But Westview then let its guard down and Millennium pounced, needing just 20 seconds after Westview’s goal to retake the lead for good. Westview failed to control a cross from Aguilar, allowing Megan Kirker to step between two defenders and deflect the ball in.

Aguilar added her third goal of the game and 19th of the season in the 66th minute to round out the scoring.

“It was very, very special and will always remember this day,” Aguilar said.
