Girls hoops: Cactus Shadows upends Seton

Cactus Shadows and Seton Catholic have rolled all season long in 4A girls basketball,  dominating region and non-region foes alike. Neither had lost to a 4A opponent to date. and they were No. 2 and 3, respectively, in the current power rankings. And Seton, the defending state champion, has managed to make its way into national rankings and shown signs of being invincible in the state regardless of the foe or conference they play in.

Something had to give in this one and Cactus Shadows was the squad producing the most fire and desire.

Leading from start to finish and sparked by junior Catilin Bickle, the host Falcons topped Seton, 54-41, in the rematch of last year's Divisioin II title game.

Cactus Shadows (19-4 overall, 14-0 in power-ranking games) welcomed the huge scoring night from Bickle. Bickle poured in 30 points -- almost twice her average -- and was not to be contained regardless of who drew the assignment to guard her. Seton, which played for the second night in a row without leading scorer and sparkplug Sarah Barcello, dropped to 20-3, 12-1 power-ranking games. Barcello was out due to a concussion suffered earlier this week against Shadow Mountain.

"Caitlin was motivated for this one," Cactus Shadows coach Richie Willis said. "She always plays all out. She brings and intensity and fire that motivates others."

Bickle scored nine points in the first period, demonstrating her will to take the ball to the basket consistently, which she did. Cactus Shadows bolted to a 10-2 lead and led 14-9 after the opening period. Bickle got help offensively from Mackenzie Hagerty, who scored seven points in the first half, five in the second period. She finished with nine points.

It was Bickle hitting a three just before the halftime buzzer giving the Falcons a 27-20 advantage going to the locker room. In the third period she took every shot Cactus Shadows attempted save a desperation buzzer-beater as the quarter expired.

"We never stopped her from penetrating," Seton coach Karen Self said. "She got to the rim whenever she wanted to. It was frustrating to watch."

Seton wasn't able to overcome Barcello's absence offensively. In fact, the Sentinels 'offensive output was likely the worst of the year. They made 11 of 49 shots for the game (22 percent). Despite the horrid shooting game, they were within 37-34 with 5:37 left to play. They saved their worst shooting quarter for last  making 1 of 11 field goals in the fourth quarter. Both teams weren't sharp at the free throw line. Cactus Shadows made 17 of 29 and Seton 17 of 27.

Cactus Shadows turned out the lights on Seton over the next two minutes. A free throw by Bickle, a three-point field goal by reserve guard Samantha Sullivan and a defensive rebound and length of the floor  run to a layup by Bickle began an 11-2 run. Seton was down 12 with under two minutes left.

"We missed a ton of layups and a lot of free throws," Self said. "A lot of the time we didn't execute like we know how."
