Semifinals set at Bob Everett BB Classic

Queen Creek won a pair of games Wednesday to nail down a berth in the semifinals of the 2nd annual Bob Everett Baseball Classic at Highland High School.

Queen Creek topped Franklin, TX, 7-2, in its morning game and secured the berth officially with a 13-3 win over Cactus in the afternoon. Queen Creek is 12-0 this season. It faces Mesa High, which won its pool via a 3-0 victory over Desert Ridge. Mesa is 8-3 overall and won all four of its pool games. Mesa and Queen Creek face off in a Thursday morning semi at 8 at Highland HS.

Taking the other two semifinal spots are Mesa Mountain View and Campo Verde. Mountain View claimed its spot with a 6-3 victory over Marcos de Niza at Mesquite HS. Mountain View added another pool win later in the day, 7-6, over Williams Field.

Campo Verde qualified for the other semifinal berth by virtue of a 13-2 triumph over Bartlesville, OK. Campo Verde posted a 3-1 record to win its pool. Mountain View and Campo Verde play their semifinal at 8 a.m. at Campo Verde HS. The semifinal winners move on to Thursday's title game at 7 at Highland High.

Queen Creek easily won its first game, building a 5-1 lead after three innings. Toren Craig. Kevon Jackson, Danny Marshall and Heiden Heindricks had two hits apiece for Queen Creek to back the pitching of Carter Schmitz. In its win over Cactus, Craig and Heindricks homered to lead a 14-hit attack.

Mountain View prevailed in its game thanks to a two-out, two-run single by Jake Young in the bottom of the fifth that snapped a 3-3 tie. Mountain View blew a 3-0 lead in the top of the inning, giving up two hits, three walks, a hit batter and an error. Cam Jowaiszas had two hits and a two-run double in the first innning for Mountain View. Harry Smith pitched four scoreless innings starting for the Toros. Drew Johnson walked three times and drove in a run for Marcos de Niza.

Mountain View rallied for two runs in its final at-bat to edge Williams Field in its second game. Jared Thomas' fielder's choice plated the winning run.

Mesa High wrapped up perfect pool play thanks to JJ Reeves. Reeves pitched a complete-game, one-hitter in the Jackrabbits' 3-0 win over Desert Ridge.
