Top seed Horizon, No. 2 Cibola 5A-II softball easy winners

Top-seeded Phoenix Horizon rolled to an easy win in Saturday’s (April 30) first round of the Class 5A Division II state softball tournament, while defending champion Peoria Centennial slipped into the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination competition.
Horizon opened Pool A play with a 14-3 victory at home over No. 16 seed Yuma High. In other Pool A games, No. 8 seed Gilbert Perry edged Centennial 4-3, No. 5 Glendale Deer Valley rolled past No. 12 Laveen Betty H. Fairfax 12-0 in six innings and No. 4 Phoenix Pinnacle defeated No. 13 Avondale Westview 10-0 in six innings.
Winner’s bracket play in Pool A on Tuesday (May 3) – Perry at Horizon (7 p.m.), Deer Valley at Pinnacle (4 p.m.). Loser’s bracket play in Pool A on Tuesday – Yuma at Centennial (4 p.m.), Westview at Betty H. Fairfax (4 p.m.).
Pool B results on Saturday went this way: No. 2 Yuma Cibola defeated No. 15 Phoenix Carl Hayden 15-0 in five innings, No. 10 Scottsdale Chaparral defeated No. 7 Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor 6-0, No. 11 Tucson Sunnyside surprised No. 6 Scottsdale Desert Mountain 7-1 and No. 3 Tucson Ironwood Ridge defeated No. 14 Marana Mountain View 15-5.
Winner’s bracket play in Pool B on Tuesday – Chaparral at Cibola (4 p.m.) and Sunnyside at Ironwood Ridge (4 p.m.). Loser’s bracket play in Pool B on Tuesday – Carl Hayden at Sandra Day O’Connor (4 p.m.) and Marana Mountain View at Desert Mountain (4 p.m.).
