East Valley dominates 1st round of 5A boys state volleyball

East Valley schools won six of the eight first-round matches Monday in the 5A state boys volleyball tournament at sites around the Valley and Tucson.

Seven of the eight opening-night matches were sweeps. Those sweeps belonged to top- seed Salpointe over Tucson; No. 8 Mountain Pointe over Ironwood Ridge; No. 13 Chandler over No. 4 Deer Valley; No. 3 Brophy over No. 14 Rincon; No. 6 Gilbert over No. 11 Marana Mtn View; No. 7 Mesa Mtn. View over No. 10 Mesquite and No. 2 Hamilton over No. 15 Corona del Sol. No. 12 Desert Vista advanced with a 3-2 win over No. 4 Boulder Creek.

The matchups in Wednesday's quarterfinals, all beginning at 6:30 p.m.,  are: Mountain Pointe at Salpointe; Chandler at Deser Vista; Gilbert at Brophy and Mesa Mtn. View at Hamilton.

There were four first-round matches in the 12-team, 4A-2A state tournament. Teams winning play-in games were No. 9 Cholla over No. 8 Marana; No. 5 Sahuaro over No. 12 McClintock; No. 11 Notre Dame over No. 6 Sabino and No. 7 Seton Catholic over No. 10 Cienega.

The matchups for Wednesday's quarterfinals, all beginning at 6:30 p.m., are: Cholla at No. 1 Catalina Foothills; Sahuaro at No. 4 Higley; Notre Dame at No. 3 Williams Field and Seton at No. 2 Catalina.
