Hamilton rides big first half to win over Red Mountain

September 2, 2017 by Andrew Castellano, Arizona State University

The Hamilton Huskies dominated the Red Mountain Lions with an impressive first half Friday at Red Mountain. The Huskies scored 42- unanswered points in the first 24 minutes, and powered to a 52-14 win.

“We’re going to speed it up and slow it down. We’ll probably do whatever the situation counts for and see how that works or us,” said  Huskies interim head coach, Dick Baniszewski, on his team's offensive tempo.

University of North Carolina commit Tyler Shough found receiver Javin Wright for a 61-yard touchdown pass on the Huskies' very first offensive play of the game.

Red Mountain (0-2) struggled offensively in the first half. Lions quarterback Cannon Griner was unable to complete a pass on his first five pass attempts. The Red Mountain Lions went three-and-out on their two opening offensive drives that resulted in four penalties and one fumble.

The Huskies turned up the tempo and scored six consecutive touchdowns. Huskies running back Jawhar Jordan Jr. had three of his team’s six touchdowns. Jordan had a total of 121 rushing yards in the first half alone. Shough threw two touchdowns and for a total of 207 yards in the first half.

The Huskies’ offensive line shined. It only allowed one first-half sack that came on the Huskies' second offensive drive of the game. The line opened holes for Jordan to hit against Red Mountain’s defensive line.

The line allowed Shough to snap the ball with confidence and the ability to communicate with his offense efficiently without any hesitation.

Red Mountain senior safety Chaz Serna said he expected the Hamilton offense to come at his secondary “hard,” in the beginning of the game. Despite giving 42 points in the first half, Serna had nothing but good things to say about his secondary, “Together is our motto, we’re family.”

Hamilton’s next game is at home against Desert Ridge. Red Mountain heads to Chandler to play Basha.
