Volleyball: Westwood TOC set for Sept. 22-23

Many of the top schools in 6A and 5A are among the field at the annual Westwood Tournament of Champions girls volleyball tournament Friday Sept. 22 and Saturday Sept. 23.

The tournament will be played at four sites in the East Valley. Westwood High is the host school with Highland, Red Mountain and Dobson also supplying venues for competition.

Play begins Friday at 11 a.m. with pool play at all sites. Each team plays 4 matches on Friday. The tournament picks up Saturday at 9 a.m. with cross pool play and by early afternoon (approximately 1 p.m.) progresses to single-elimination bracket play in four different brackets. The top bracket finishes up at Westwood High.

Nearly half of the 34 teams entered (16) are among the top 16 in the power rankings of 6A and 5A. The defending champion is Corona del Sol, currenlty No. 1 in the 6A power ranking.

Here are Friday's pool assignments:

Pool A at Westwood: Corona del Sol, Centennial, Sandra Day O'Connor, Rincon, Desert Ridge, American Leadership, Westwood, Ironwood and Saguaro.

Pool B at Highland: Basha, Millennium, Sunnyslope, Boulder Creek, Highland, Deer Valley, Mesa Mtn. View, Ben Franklin, Marana Mtn. View.

Pool C at Red Mountain: Hamilton, Mesa, Pinnacle, Gilbert, Red Mountain, Prescott, Marcos de Niza, Tucson.

Pool D at Dobson: Perry, Desert Vista, Mountain Ridge, Notre Dame Prep, Liberty, Thunderbird, Skyline, Dobson.
