Coronado Falls to Combs 48-7

October 14, 2017 by Victoria Alvarado, Arizona State University

The Combs Coyotes defeated the Coronado Dons in a conference game Friday, 48-7.

The Coyotes struck first with a touchdown, but the Dons responded quickly. Coronado wide receiver Zach Lewis intercepted the ball and ran it back for a 55-yard touchdown.

Combs gained momentum in the second quarter, scoring two touchdowns and intercepting the ball twice.

“We got to know what they do really well and made a plan that we thought would work for us,” said Combs head coach Travis Miller.

The Coyotes didn’t throw many passes, and instead focused on running the ball, which turned out to be key for them in the end.

In preparation for Friday, the Coyotes “spent a lot of time watching film, we studied it and then tried to perfect it,” said tight end Justin Rowe. “No game’s perfect.”

Combs peaked in the fourth quarter, scoring four of their seven touchdowns. One touchdown was off a blocked punt, which was recovered and ran back 65 yards by senior offensive linebacker Junior Loggins.

Although they lost, players and coaches from Coronado keep their heads up. “Zach Lewis has been a key player for us, he’s always got a smile on his face and always in a good mood,” said head coach Curt LeBlanc. “We have a lot of teaching that needs to be done; it’s my first year so we have to get some stuff tuned up and we will, it just takes some time.”

The win Combs added to their record today did not come without difficulty. “We still had two interceptions in this game and we probably had five or six penalties, so we need to work on perfecting what we do and be disciplined at it,” said Miller.

On Coronado’s side, the game “just didn’t unfold like I thought it did. So we just have to back to the drawing board and figure out what we can do better,” said LeBlanc.

Looking to next week, Coronado faces the Apache Junction Prospectors. Combs faces the Washington Rams.
