October 17, 2017 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Two left weeks left of the regular season for 6A through 2A schools. Here are the matchups with East Valley and Northeast Valley schools in action on Friday Oct. 20 as the majority of schools return from fall break. Seven are highlighted with teams in the top 20 in the power-rankings of their respective conferences showing their current ranking (Oct. 17):

FRIDAY OCT. 20

6A

#1 Hamilton (7-1) at #5 Perry (7-1): Last time these teams met was last November in a wild 63-60 overtime win for Perry. Perry notched a win over Hamilton a couple weeks earlier by a huge margin. These teams continue to light up the scoreboard with Perry averaging 56 points a game and Hamilton 44. The teams have improved defensively in terms of points allowed giving up just more than 20 per game each. Still expect a shootout as Hamilton's Tyler Shough and Perry's Brock Purdy square off. Both accounted for five TDs rushing/passing in the last meeting and totaled nearly 800 yards of offense between them.

#11 Skyline (5-3) at #7 Red Mountain (6-2): Region title on the line as it was last year. Skyline claimed the region title last year with a 17-14 win and lost an enusing matchup two weeks late in the playoffs to the Lions, 16-13. Red Mountain went on to play in the semifinals. Red Mountain has won six games in a row since losing to Chandler and Hamilton to begin the season; Skyline's losses are to Hamilton, Highland and Desert Vista -- all top-10 teams.Skyline is led by running back Aaron Wood, who has 1,121 yards on the ground and 14 TDs. He's strung together five consecutive 100-yard games. Red Mountain has displayed balance on offense. The Lions have rushed for 1, 400 yards and passed for 1,400 yards. Four backs have 200 yards rushing or more led by sophomore Ty McElroy (534). Like the ground game, quarterback Cannon Griner has several receivers at his disposal.

#4 Chandler (6-2) vs. Brophy Prep (1-8) at Phoenix College:

#3 Mountain Pointe (6-2) at Corona del Sol (1-7)

#18 Sandra Day O'Connor (2-6) at #13 Desert Mountain (4-4)

#10 Desert Vista (5-3) at #2 Desert Ridge (7-1)

#6 Highland (6-2) at # 15 Gilbert (4-4)

#16 Boulder Creek (3-5) at #9 Horizon (7-1)

Dobson (3-5) at Mesa (3-6)

#8 Pinnacle (6-3) at Mountain Ridge (2-6)

#17 Mesa Mtn. View (4-4) at Westwood (4-4)

5A

#18 Sunnyslope (5-3) at #15 McClintock (5-3):  This is a big game as both schools are battling for playoff spots. Five schools in the 5A Metro Region are in contention for postseason according to the power rankings -- Apollo at #5, Mariciopa (11), McClintock (17), Raymond Kellis (18) and Sunnyslope (24). Slope can win the region with wins this week and next over Apollo  - a tall order. McClintock has a good chance of qualifying by winning out, but has its hands full with Slope and Maricopa in its finale.

#16 Maricopa (5-3) at #19 Raymond Kellis (5-3): This matchup echoes the Sunnyslope-McClintock contest. It's not necessarily an elimination game, but the winner has higher hopes heading to the final week than the loser. Maricopa gave red-hot Apollo its toughest game since an opeing night loss to Centennial. Kellis has yet to win a region game, bowing to McClintock, Apollo and Sunnyslope.

Sierra Linda (0-7) at #12 Campo Verde (6-2)

Poston Butte (4-4) at Cholla (4-4)

#11 Chaparral (4-4) at North Canyon (4-4)

Arcadia (0-8) at #4 Notre Dame Prep (8-0)

#2 Queen Creek (8-0) at Vista Grande (0-8)

Mesquite (3-5) at #13 Williams Field (6-2)

4A

#4 Higley (7-1) at #11 Marcos de Niza (4-4): If Marcos de Niza is to qualify for the playoffs it needs to have a strong finish or its string of 12 successive playoff appearances will come to an end. Marcos enters the week at No. 13 in the power rankings. The Padres finish the season next week against Tempe High. knocking off Higley would be a huge boost to extending its playoff appearance streak. Higley has bludgeoned every opponent save its kryptonite (Saguaro). Higley's offense will test Marcos as it has done throughout the season. Last year Higley managed to defeat senior-dominated MDN, 36-27.

Coronado (1-7) at #25 Apache Junction (4-4)

Casa Grande (4-5) at #6 Seton Catholic (7-1)

#1 Saguaro (6-2) at Shadow Mountain (2-6)

Combs (3-5) at Washington (1-7)

3A

#4 Florence (6-1) at #5 Benjamin Franklin (7-1): 3A allows the top two finishers in each region an atuomatic postseason berth and that's what's at stake for the winner in this one. Both teams losses have come to region champ American Leadership Academy. Benjamin Franklin is riding a seven-game winning streak and looks to avenge a 48-41 loss last year to the Gophers.

Coolidge (2-6) at #2 American Leadership Academy (7-1)

#11 Fountain Hills (5-3) at ASU Prep Academy (0-7)

#3 Casteel (8-0) at North Pointe Prep (1-7)

#8 Yuma Catholic (6-2) at #23 Valley Christian (3-4)

2A

#6 Scottsdale Christian (8-1) at #2 Phoenix Christian (8-0): The winner is the Metro West Region champion. Phoenix Christian prevailed, 33-21, last year and has proven the dominant team in the region allowing less than a touchdown per game and scoring 50-plus points per outing. PC running back Malik Taylor is closing in on 1,000 yards rushing with 951 and has 18 rushing scores. Quarterback Hunter Cole has thrown 26 TD passes, 10 of them to wide out Corey Leary. Scottsdale Christian features a 1,000-yard rusher in Shayne Pahnke and wide out Jacob Kaites, who is also to the 1,000-yard receiving mark (984 on 55 receptions).

#17 Chandler Prep (5-3) at Arizona College Prep (1-7)

Camp Verde (2-5) at #5 Gilbert Christian (6-2)

Scottsdale Prep (0-8) at #8 San Tan Foothills (6-2)

Joy Christian (1-7) at #10 Tempe Prep (4-4)
