Mesa, Skyline fill vacant baseball, softball positions

Mesa High has hired a baseball coach and Skyline a softball coach to fill vacancies from resignations of those positions last month.

Mesa tabbed Mike Masciangelo, former head coach at Higley and an assistant at a couple of other schools to take over for Joe Bergen. Masciangelo served as an assistant at Mesquite in 2011 and also assisted at Mesa Mountain View and Mesquite prior to that. Mascianeglo was Higley's coach from 2008-2010 and guided the Knights to the 4A-II quarterfinals in 2009. Masciangelo is a Dobson High graduate and played baseball for the Mustangs.

Skyline did not search far and wide for its next softball coach announcing that former varsity assistant Scott Howard will take the reigns.

Howard previously served as an assistant to varsity coach Jim Faul. Faul resigned in May after four seasons. Howard coached Skyline's junior varsity softball team this past season. Howard is a Chandler High grad and was a football standout for the Wolves.

Skyline qualified for the state softball tournament each of the last three years -- 2009 in 5A-II and 2010-2011 in 5A-I. The Coyotes were eliminated in two rounds in 2011, dropping games to Mesa Mountain View and Chandler.
