Chandler dominates rival Hamilton

October 28, 2017 by John Mendoza, Arizona State University

The Arizona Ave trophy is staying on the north side of town for the fifth straight year as the No. 5 Chandler Wolves steamrolled the No. 4 Hamilton Huskies behind their dynamic offense.

“(The win) is not only big for us as a team but it’s big for the community. It’s bigger than just us,” Wolves defensive lineman Chris Manoa said.

DeCarlos Brooks led the way for the Wolves with 104 rushing yards on 11 carries averaging 9.5 yards per carry. Brooks finished with a team high four touchdowns. “We’ve been preparing for this game all week so when we get in there we know what to do,” Brooks said.

Drake Anderson had a great performance of his own finishing with 177 all-purpose yards including 165 rushing on just nine carries to average 18.7 yards per carry. Anderson finished with two touchdowns of his own.

The Wolves also were a threat to throw the ball.

Quarterback Jacob Conover went 19-25 for 361 yards and a touchdown with a quarterback rating of 130. Gunner Romney was Conover’s leading target and he caught nine passes for 205 yards. Jarick Caldwell hauled in the lone touchdown pass.

The Wolves jumped out to a 29-7 first quarter lead and they never looked back as they eased to a 50-14 victory. The Wolves even had the running clock for most of the fourth quarter as they led 50-7.

The Wolves Defense did their part in the win.

They held to Huskies to 261 total offensive yards and held the state’s top running back Jahwar Jordan Jr. to just 71 total yards and stopped him from getting to the end zone. “During the week, our focus was stopping the run. Last week at Brophy we kind of struggled stopping the run so this week we keyed in,” Manoa said.

Coach Shaun Aguano wants his team to get right back to work as they prepare for the playoffs. “We just have to keep on track and know that we have a goal to accomplish,” he said.

The Wolves next game will be a playoff game on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Austin Field. Their opponent and seeding will be announced during the AZPreps live bracket show Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m.
