Established 1913

August 1, 2011 by Chuck Schmidt, AZPreps365

Established in 1913… with a history that has bridged two world wars, a depression and the challenges that a new state faced, the AIA has been there since the beginning of Arizona. As we start our 99th year, many changes have occurred since 1913, let alone in the past decade, but the one constant is that we have always focused on what is best for our students. It may seem at times that decisions made may be harsh and/or difficult to understand, but underlying each decsion is a 99 year foundation promoting equity, fairness and a commitment to the educational institutions we serve.

I recently had the opportunity to look at one of the few remaining notebooks/minutes from 1913. We may have change when it comes to classification, tournament structure, schedules, etc... but many things remain the same. One of the infractions the Board discussed and acted on were two baseball players and their eligibility. Both students had been identified as having been paid to play. The Board fined the school for allowing them to play and stripped the students of their eligibility. In the discussion and their decision, the Board reflected on their role to promote equity and fairness. This is the case today…

As we look to the year, we are going to be dealing with recruiting issues, bylaw violations, competitive equity concerns, diversity, recognition and the changing, ever changing business environment. The AIA has been resilient and taken on the Arizona spirit of resiliency and that of pioneers, this year will be no different.

From inside the AIA, we will continue to move forward and the first step this year will be our AIA Executive Board and Leadership Study Session that will be held this Thursday and Friday. The Board and staff will be preparing for the year by identifying our goals, objectives and possible issues in advance, so we can prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead.   Unlike 1913, you will be able to follow our progress and news from the AIA through blogs, social media, and press coverage, in real time, not days or moths after the fact.

I hope that those who came before us see our efforts and are truly proud that we have remained true to our mission, promoting what is best for kids. Established 1913… I do not know of too many organizations in Arizona that have been around as long, especially with such an awesome mission of serving our students, teams and ultimately our future.

Here is to 2011 – 2012, our 99th year.
