Brophy’s soccer pitch went pitch black.

Somebody turned off the lights Tuesday night just as Chandler’s coach finished shaking the hands of Brophy’s players after the match. No word yet on whether the light operator was in a hurry to get somewhere, or if he or she wanted to turn off the 1-1 tie on the scoreboard as soon as possible.

But the lights weren’t needed to conclude which team walked away feeling more satisfied in a matchup between this season’s 6A Conference boys soccer headliners. Chandler’s worn out squad was more upbeat as it headed toward its bench after playing 100 minutes, as Brophy's subdued team huddled at midfield in the darkness.

Brophy’s players likely weren’t too pleased with netting only one goal in the 27 shots it took. Chandler made the most of its four shots.

“In the final third we need to be patient and just continue to keep the ball,” Brophy coach Paul Allen said.

A lot was on the line in the biggest match of the regular soccer season so far, including a section title if Brophy had won.

Brophy completed its section schedule and will have to wait until after Chandler’s match with Basha to determine the final section outcome. Basha is 5-11 overall, but it will get a tired and beat up Chandler Wednesday night.

“The tempo was very, very fast,” Chandler coach Sasha Hunter said. “Obviously the kids hadn’t played this caliber of a team. This was a really hard game for them as far as it being physical. You saw how many guys fell off my squad. We had three or four guys get hurt.”

The pace of Tuesday’s match between the only undefeated teams in 6A was indeed fast on Brophy’s synthetic turf.

That led to some entertaining, back and forth final minutes, including the two 10-minute overtimes. Chandler had a great chance to score the game winner in the final five minutes, but Brophy’s goalkeeper came off his line to erase Chandler’s best opportunity at a second goal.

Brophy (17-0-2 overall, 3-0-1 in section) took a lot of shots, but most them weren’t on frame. Brophy also kept looking for its tall threat, Carter Clemmensen, up front.

“(Clemmensen) will get open looks,” Allen said. “He’s a great player. He was a little off tonight obviously because he didn’t score, but he’s a handful either way.”

Both goals were scored in the first couple of minutes of each half. Chandler (15-0-4 overall, 2-0-1 in section) struck first during a counterattack, when Kevin Mesa found Jesus Garcia, the team's leading scorer, making a diagonal run to the right side.

After creating some space between him and a defender, Garcia held on until the last second before going far post in the 7th minute. At the outset of the second half, Brophy was the aggressor on a night in which the program honored its 14 seniors participating in their final regular season home game.

One of those seniors, UCSB-bound midfielder Sam Fletcher, made two good moves with the ball to set up Brophy’s lone goal. On his second attempt to find open space, a Chandler defender tripped Fletcher inside the penalty area.

Sean Tucker went on to convert the penalty kick in the 43rd minute. The match got a bit more physical in the opening minutes of the second half, as five yellow cards were handed out in the match.

But once the clock started winding down, the action and pace picked up even more.
