Betty Fairfax rolls past Camelback

January 30, 2018 by Aleli Elizondo, Arizona State University

Betty Fairfax took the win 77-46 against Camelback in boys basketball on Tuesday night.

Marlon Rhymes, Camelback basketball coach, explained that this game was going to be different for the Spartans.

Half of the varsity team is injured and Rhymes had some decisions on which junior varsity boys were joining the varsity team. In the beginning of the game the Spartans came out hot, as the JV players were not intimidated.

In the first quarter both teams came in with strong defense, the game was tied at 14 with 2:50 to play. Fairfax ended the quarter with a lead of 15-14.

Sophomore Prince Nshuti kept up with the Fairfax speed in the game, and was able to steal some passes.

“During the first quarter we played good defense,” said Nshuti.

Down by only one at the end of the first quarter the Spartans looked confident. During the first quarter the Spartans did well at breaking the Fairfax 2-3 zone defense.

Rhymes knew it was going to be a challenging game because he had three starters that are players on the JV team, with only two starters from the varsity team.

“Stick to the game plan,” said Rhymes. That was the advice he gave the team before starting the game.

Fairfax basketball coach Josh Wray explained how for this game the team did not make any changes to the game plan.

“Trying to continue what we been doing, I don’t want to make any drastic changes right now,” Wray said.

The most noticeable asset of the Fairfax team was the speed, from the moment the game started.

During the second quarter Fairfax begin to pick up their tempo. Another advantage that Fairfax had over the Spartans was size.

“We have some big players and fast players and works out better for us,” Wray said.

Fairfax did not allow the Spartans to get ahead, scoring 19 points to the Spartans' four in the second quarter.

“After the second quarter we kind of got off a little bit,” Nshuti said.

Fairfax had strong defense during the second quarter that allowed Makael Rainbow to score seven of the 19 points.

“He is good at attacking the basket,” Wray said.

Senior Reagan Donovan made a three-point shot right at the buzze to end the third quarter. Fairfax took a 55-33 lead.

The dynamic of the game was different due to having many of the Camelback varsity players injured.

“If they would have had all the injured players, it would have been a different game,” Rhymes said.

Rhyme told the athletes how this was a learning experience for them, to learn how Fairfax plays and they know how to prepare for next year.

“Let it marinate, this will give you fuel over the summer, stick to the plan and trust the process,” Rhyme said.
