BASKETBALL: Southern Arizona Notebook

Gabe Elias scored 12 points to help Empire defeat Catalina 71-54 on Friday night. The win gave the Ravens a guaranteed piece of the 3A South Region title. Gabriel Martin led Empire with 15 points. Philippe Kijana and Jose Lugo led Catalian with 15 points.

 

Let’s take a brief look at some of the region titles still up for grabs from Southern Arizona:

 

6A SOUTHERN REGION

On the boy’s side, Tucson is 4-0 in the Southern Region and the Badgers will travel to Cibola (4-0) next Tuesday, Feb. 6 for the region championship. The region champion gets the automatic playoff berth.

The Tucson girls (4-0) will host Cibola (4-0) on Tuesday for the region title. .

 

4A KINO REGION

Canyon del Oro (7-1) claimed a piece of the region title for the girls but the Salpointe Lancers (5-1) can get the other piece if they win out due to a split with each other. If Salpointe wins the last two games on the schedule, then the Lancers will get the automatic berth due to better overall record.

 

3A SOUTH REGION

Sabino (10-1) and Empire (11-1) boys are in the playoffs since the top three teams in 3A regions earn automatic bids but Empire has the region title with Sabino hoping to share it with one more win. Sahuarita (5-5) earned the third automatic bid.

Sabino (9-2), Empire (9-3), Pusch Ridge (8-3) and Tanque Verde (8-3) are in on the girl’s side but the teams are battling for seed position. It’s possible all four teams will finish with a 9-3 record.
