Brophy Prep defeats Pinnacle on Baker's last second shot

February 2, 2018 by Adam Hushion, Arizona State University

With 11.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter Pinnacle’s Nico Mannion stepped to the line and coolly hit two free throws to give his team a one-point lead over Brophy.

The packed Brophy Prep stands went dead quiet after watching the Broncos give up a 10-point lead. The silence would not last long.

After advancing the ball past half court, a screen was set for Brophy forward Jaxson Baker, who pulled up and nailed a 3-point shot as time expired to win the game 62-60.

The entire Brophy bench, followed by the student section, stormed onto the court to congratulate Baker on his game-winning shot.

“In my head before [Mannion] shot the first free throw, I told myself that if I had an opportunity to win the game I was going to hit it,” said Baker. “I think that bit of calmness and focus helped me to be able put myself in that position to hit the shot.”

Baker was ready for that shot far before the game had even started. “The other day I was at home imagining a late-game situation. Maybe that helped me a bit, but it was a play that you dream of as a kid.”

When asked what went through his head after hitting the game-winner, Baker simply replied: “Bedlam, I don’t even remember watching the ball go in.”

“I’d love to say it was how we drew it up,” said Brophy coach Matt Hooten. “At the end of the day [Baker] was in a great position to make a shot he’s hit 1,000 times in that gym.”

Baker finished with a team-high 28 points and led the charge for Brophy (23-1) both on the glass and defensively.

Mannion was the game's high scorer with 33 points, 23 of which came in the fourth quarter.

“I like [Baker],'' said Mannion. "That’s my guy. He’s a solid all-round player, he shoots it, he’s long, he’s athletic, he played a really good game. He hit a big shot at the end, props to him.”

Brophy stretched its win streak to 11 games, while ending Pinnacle’s 10-game win streak, dropping their record to 18-7.

Hooten, looking ahead, said, “It was a great moment for us, but we have to remember that by tomorrow morning we’ve got to get ready for Tuesday, the season is not over.”

Baker agreed. “It’s not the highlight of our season because were trying to keep pushing.”

Brophy Prep hosts St. Marys Tuesday to close out its regular season.
