Top-seed Brophy didn't have one of of its best games of the season Friday night, but the defense the Broncos play most nights was in tow.

It needed to be. On a night offense was a struggle for both sides, the Broncos and opened up some daylight in the third period and made two key 3s and just enough free throws at the finish to hold over #9 Perry, 47-38, in a 6A quarterfinal game at Brophy Prep.

Brophy (26-1) managed to defeat Perry (16-13) or the third time this season and tally its 14th consecutive win to advance to Wednesday's semifinals at 7:30 against #5 Mountain Pointe at Wells Fargo Arena. Mounain Pointe advanced with a victory over #13 Chandler, 76-48.

Brophy's Ian Burke led his team with 14 points and enjoyed a quaiity defensive night guarding Perry's prolific scoring Jalen Williams .Williams finished with just eight points. Williams did not make  a 3, something he's adept at and with range. He finished 2 of 14 from the field.

Brophy had two more players in double figures -- Marques White and (11) and Colin Besch (10). Burke and White made consecutive threes in the final three minutes to help stymie Perry's attempt at a comeback.

"Williams has been on such a run the last couple of weeks, we were very concerned about him," Brophy coach Matt Hooten said. "Ian did a great job on him with his long arms, and we have other guys with long arms. (Kyle) Patterson had a heck of a game for them so there was a lot to concentrate on."

A game played with physicality and solid from both teams (some might term it ugly) went down to the wire. Neither team shot well, a tribute to the defense more often than not. Brophy led 17-13 at halftime as both teams shot 28 percent from the field.

Scoring didn't pick up much in the second half, but with 4:28 left to play Perry had sliced a 28-18 deficit to 30-26 on two free throws by Jalen Williams. A couple possessions later, Burke  sank a 3 left of the key and 30 seconds later Marques White did the same from the right corner to pump the lead up to 36-28.

Perry stayed in the game in the final two minutes because Brophy couldn't hit enough free throws to end it. The Broncos missed four free throws in the first three minutes of the final quarter and only 3 of 7 more with 38 seconds left. Reserve guard Jaden Cons and Jaxson Baker righted the free-throw ship in the final 35 seconds combining to make 6 of 6.

Patterson, who missed half the season due to his transfer from Gilbert Christian, led all scorers with 16 points. Perry made two 3s in the game -- Patterson for Perry's first basket and CJ Jamerson for Perry's final points.

"I thought Jalen had some good looks, they just wouldn't go down," Perry coach Sammy Duane Jr. said. "We didn't shoot well, but they made us not shoot it so well....

"We started the year a work in progress. We made a lot of strides. At times our youth showed tonight and their experience showed."
