Basketball is life for Chaparral's Maddie Vick

February 18, 2018 by Lexy Cancelmi, Arizona State University

There’s no denying the 5-foot-8-guard’s dominance on the court. A four-year varsity player for the Firebirds, Maddie Vick averaged 15.4 points per game in the 2017-2018 season and is committed to the Cal Poly Mustangs.

Vick and her team are currently in the midst of the 2018 AIA Girls Basketball state championship, with only two wins separating them from being champs. The love for basketball came at a young age for Vick, second grade to be exact.

Once she started playing she couldn’t stop and her passion for the game continued to grow. Playing year-round, whether it was travel ball with Arizona Select or for her school, Vick played whenever and wherever she could.

Although Vick may eat, sleep and breathe basketball, she is still a normal teenage girl who loves spending her time with family and friends.

“I come from a family of seven,” Vick said. “I have two sisters and two brothers. Makayla,18, Jacob, 13, Jameson, 12, and Mia who is four years old.”

Neither of Vick’s parents played basketball but have built a love for the game. Not every teenager wants to spend most of their free time with family but Vick is the complete opposite. “My sister Mia is my favorite person in the entire world and is already learning and loving the game of basketball,” Vick said.

Mia may be her favorite person but her mom Tracy, is Vick’s go-to when navigating through the trials and tribulations of life. “My mom and I are so much alike and have such a good relationship, she is someone I can always count on to give me the best advice,” Vick said.

Although it will be hard for the family when Vick leaves for university in the fall, Tracy is confident in her daughter’s dedication, ability to handle pressure, leadership, discipline and pure intentions to take her along the journey.

“The advice I give Maddie is simple, keep being you and stay true to what you believe,” Tracy said.

Tracy isn’t the only one who has taken notice of Vick’s diligence on and off the court. Vick’s coach Brian Porth, gives credence to Vick’s hard work and not only being a good teammate but being a good friend.

“It sounds cliché but her constant work and strive for greatness has allowed such a diverse skill set,” Porth said. “But aside from that she’s the kind of teammate to go out of their way to be there for everyone.”

Basketball aside, Vick is a just your typical teenage girl who loves eating Mexican food, watching romantic comedies and checking in on what Drake and LeBron James are up to. Vick will be studying sports management as well as minoring in psychology.

After college Vick hopes to either coach at the collegiate level or start her own special needs athletic program. “My love for basketball and working with special needs kids sparked these goals and I am just so excited to begin this journey” Vick said.
