Mesa Mountain View baseball has missed the state playoffs each of the last two years, but early returns this year are pointing to an end of that mini-drought.

Jared Thomas launched a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth that break a tie on Friday afternoon and helped Mountain View slip past Mountain Pointe, 6-5, in a 6A non-region game at Mountain View.

Mountain View won its fourth game in a row and improved to 5-1, 3-0 in power-ranking games as the season's second week nears its end. The only Toros' squad in the last decade to have a better getaway was the 2008 squad. That team began the season 6-0, was 12-1 at one point and won 26 games.

'It's been awhile since we've started this well," Mountain View coach Mike Thiel said. "There is good chemistry on this team. Everybody seems to be buying in to the team concept."

Thomas homered to center to leadoff the inning. It took the sting out of a three-run rally by Mountain Pointe in the top of the fourth that tied the game for the first time. Mountain View kept at it in the bottom of the fourth after the home run to scratch out what proved to be the decisive run on Cam Jowaiszas' two-out single to center for a 6-4 lead.

Mountain View junior starter Sean Rimmer was the winning pitcher after taking a no-decision in his only other start. Rimmer tossed four innings. He allowed four runs (three earned), five hits, no walks and fanned three. Mountain Pointe bunched four hits in the fourth with three doubles and an infield single.

"He's been hot at the plate from the start and other than missing with a couple of 0-2 pitches in that inning, he's pitched very well," Thiel said. "He had a tough year last year. As a sophomore he tried too hard. Tried to do too much. We're getting contributions from a lot of guys, and he's one of them."

Rimmer is hitting .647 the first six games and was 1 for 1 with two walks and an RBI on Friday. He's one of four Toros who has homered thus far. The others are Erick Bahn., Thomas and Jowaizsas.

Third baseman Joe Georgini knocked in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and single. He also pitched the final two innings to earn the save. Leadoff hitter McKay Barney was in the middle of all three Mountain View two-run rallies with a single, double and hit by pitch.

Mountain Pointe lost for the second time this week (both by a run) and is 2-2 for the year. All its games thus far have been of the power-ranking variety. The Pride was led at the plate by Jacob McKeon with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Joel Adamson alslo drove in two runs with his lone hit of the game a double down the left-field line that tied the game 4-4.
