Mesa schools flexed their muscles Saturday afternnoon in the first round of the 6A state baseball tournament with #21 Westwood, #11 Skyline, #4 Red Mountain and #1 Mountain View all prevailing.

Skyline's Cole Yocum blasted a three-run homer to highlight a five-run, eighth inning as the Coyotes knocked off #6 Chandler, 8-3, at Chandler High.

Skyline won its second do-or-die game, topping Desert Ridge on Wednesday.  Anthony Ruiz came on and pitched three innings of sparking, no-hit relief to pick up the win for the Coyotes.

Skyline takes on Brophy on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at HoHoKam Stadium in the first round of double elimination play.

#15 WESTWOOD 4, #2 CORONA DEL SOL 2: Manny Collier's two-run homer broke a scoreless tie in the sixth and the Warriors went on to record their second upset of the tournaey, this one over the Aztecs at Corona. Jagger Parke with the complete game effort on the mound. He allowed six hits, walked three and fanned three.

Westwood plays its first game in double elimination play against Sandra Day O'Connor on Tuesday at 6:30 at HoHoKam Stadium. Westwood took part of two days to beat San Luis in the play-in game, 7-3, in 11 innings.

#1 MESA MTN. VIEW 5, MILLENNIUM 4:  The Toros overcame the Tigers bid for a second tournament upset by scoring three runs in the fifth for the win at Mountain View. Millennium beat #9 Pinnacle on Wednesday in the play-in game.

Millennium took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth challenging Mountain View to forge a comeback. Mountain View loaded the bases and scored one run on a single by Joe Georgini , his third RBI of th game. Jared Thomas followed with a two-run single that capped the rally. John Neeley and Georgini combined for the win on the mound -- Neeley worked the first five innings and Georgini the last two. 

#4 RED MOUNTAIN 8, #13 MOUNTAIN POINTE 1: Andrew Hayes doubled and tripled and drove in four runs to pace the Mountain Lions past the Pride at HoHoKam Stadium.

Kai Murphy worked six innings allowing six hits and striking out eight. Luke Hyzdu also had two hits for Red Mountain. #5 Mountain Ridge faces Red Mountain on Tuesday at 4  at Diablo Stadium in the first round of double elimination play.

#8 HAMILTON 3, #9 DESERT MOUNTAIN 2: Wil Maxey's single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh knocked in the game winner as the Huskies edged the Wolves at Hamilton.

Michael Brueser hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to get Hamilton even at 2. Hamilton advances to face #1 Mesa Mountain View  on Tuesday at 6:30 at Diablo Stadium in the first round of double-elimination play.

#5 MOUNTAIN RIDGE 9, #12 PERRY 4:  Preston Godfrey cracked a three-run homer in a five-run, third inning that helped push the Mountain Lions and Matt Liberatore past the Pumas at Mountain Ridge.

Liberatore managed to go the distance after trailing some early. He allowed four hits, all four runs (two earned) and struck out nine. Luke Blachut was 3 for 3 with two RBI to complement Godfrey's day at the plate. 

#7 SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR 11, DESERT VISTA 8: The Eagles rallied from a 6-1 deficit and then extinguished a potential rally in the seventh to top the Thunder at SDO.

SDO scored eight runs in the fourth and fifth combined to overcome its deficit. Nolan Gorman walked three times and homered in his only official plate appearance. It was a three-run shot in the fourth that began the comeback. Zak Elms also homered for SDO. Brandon Schlabach and Tommy Malley drove in two runs each for Desert Vista. 

#14 BROPHY PREP 7, #3 BASHA 4: The Broncos answered a four-run rally by the Bears in the third with a five in th fourth carrying the Broncos to the victory at Basha. Connor Park ripped a bases-loaded triple to highlight the big inning for Brophy. Will Worthington hit a solo homer for Brophy. Brophy starter Mason Kokodynski went 6  2/3 innings  and fanned eight. He gave up the four runs, all unearned.

#1 MESQUITE 17, #16 APOLLO 2: (five innings) The Wildcats dominated the Hawks from the get-go at Mesquite. TJ Clarkson led a 13-hit attack in just four innings of at-bats. Clarkson was 3-3 with 4 RBI. David Watson had 3 RBI and Jacob Henderson, Cole Westerlund and Holden Breeze two apiece. Chase Webster worked the five innings and allowed four hits for the win. Mesquite faces San Tan Region rival Queen Creek in the first round of double elimination play on Monday at 6:30 at Diablo Stadium.

#8 QUEEN CREEK 11, #9 RAYMOND KELLIS 1: The Bulldogs eliminated last year's 5A champs with a run-rule win at Queen Creek.

Queen Creek slugged four homers -- all in a 10-run rally in the fourth inning. Ryan Dobbs homered twice in the inning and Jacob Alexander and Brenden Blakeman also went yard. Danny Marshall pitched all five innings for the win.

#7 BUENA 7, #10 CAMPO VERDE 4: Last year's state runner-up, the Coyotes, also finished their season early like Raymond Kellis, with a loss to the Colts.

#3 SETON CATHOLIC 8, #14 MARCOS DE NIZA 3: Luke Bell settled in after allowing three runs in the first inning and the Sentinels gradually battled back to eliminate the Padres at Seton.

Seton rallied for its first lead at 4-3 after three innings and broke it open with four runs in the sixth. The big hit was a three-run homer by Mike Kenney. Bell pitched the first four innings ande Kennet finished with three scoreless frames. Seton hosts the St. Mary's on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the first round of double elimination play.
