With only one match remaining, the Marcos de Niza men's golf team is looking to end the season on a high note.

This hasn’t been the most successful season for the Paddres, but they are making the most out of not making the state tournament.

“That is the beauty about golf,” Padres senior Nick Hargis said. “You can play horribly, but when you have good people around you and you’re all joking around having a good time, it can still be fun.”

Marcos de Niza’s four golfers had a solid showing last Tuesday at a match against Paradise Valley and Coronado. Sam Wynne finished 11-over, taking third place. Alex Denham took fourth, finishing 12-over. Jason Johnson and Nick Hargis tied for fifth with 19-over scores.

“We’ve had some really good rounds this season and have played at some really tough courses,” head coach Matthew Courtney said. “Those courses really challenged their mental toughness.”

“I am able to get better each match,” Padres senior Sam Wynne said. “Playing at those tough courses help me practice and become a better golfer.”

With both of the Padres’ No.1 and No. 2 two pairings graduating in May, Courtney is hoping his seniors are helping to mentor and teach his underclassmen.

“Honestly, my role as a mentor is one of the most important parts of me being on this team,” Hargis said.

Courtney hopes that his seniors were able to learn important aspects of life that will help them even after they graduate.

“Being able to teach these kids a game they can use in the business world,” Courtney said. “I hope they were able to learn skills that will also help them outside of the sports world.”

The Padres’ final match is at 3 p.m.. Tuesday at Rolling Hills Golf Course.
