In a rematch of Agua Fria 2A Region titans, Scottsdale Christian proved its own enemy.

The Eagles had a touchdown called back for holding and several false start penalties in a 49-20 loss to Arizona Lutheran.

“We kept putting ourselves in third and 15 and that’s the stuff we just can’t do as a team especially when we’re playing a good team like ALA,” said coach Jason Cauley.

The Coyotes unique punishing run game was on full display from the start. They jumped to a 35-7 halftime lead.

Scottsdale Christian awoke in the second half and scored on consecutive onside kicks to close the gap but it wasn't enough.

“We came out after halftime with way more energy I thought and we killed it in the fourth,” Eagles quarterback Grant Schreyer said.

“I know that a lot of kids on the team are watching me so if I am calm, cool and collected then they are but if I’m angry and getting out of control it changes the whole mood of the sidelines and the game.''

Scottsdale Christian fell to 4-2. Arizona Lutheran is 6-0.

“It’s easy to put your head down when the other team gets a big drive,'' said defensive leader and team captain Hunter Hancock. "But the most important thing is to stay together and remember it’s about the guys you are playing alongside.''

Cauley looked ahead. “Sometimes you get beat by a better team and tonight ALA was a better team than us,” Cauley said. “However, the season is not over and we are going to get better from this. We’re going to get working tomorrow on correcting our mistakes.”

The Eagles next game is Friday at ASU Prep.
