Salpointe beat Catalina Foothills by 23 strokes to capture the championship of the Flowing Wells Tournament of Champions held at Silverbell on Friday and Saturday. Walden Grove’s Gabriel Escalera led the way on the individual scorecard with an even-par 140 and Rincon/University standout Dallan Graybill finished two strokes behind at 142.

As a team, the Falcons earned the Sportsmanship Award in honor of longtime Santa Rita golf coach Mike Acevedo who passed away in 2015.

Escalera is currently ranked No. 18 in Division II, which puts him in position for one of the 18 at-large spots available for state competition. Graybill is ranked No. 36 in D-I action, also in position for an at-large berth to the state playoffs.

Rounding off the top five, Catalina Foothills standout Jacob Goode took third (+4 144) and Ironwood Ridge standout Jarrod Johnson was tied for fourth (+6 146) with Carlos Leon of Salpointe.  Goode is ranked No. 13 in D-II and is safe for an at-large berth while Johnson and Leon are attached to teams currently qualified for state competition. As a team, Ironwood Ridge took third in the tournament, Rincon/Univerity placed fourth and Walden Grove took fifth.

The Division II state golf championship for boys and girls is scheduled for Oct. 22-23 at the Omni Tucson National and the D-I state championship is slated for the following week, Oct. 29-30.
