Page, Chinle capture cross country team victories

Page Sand Devils placed its five scoring runners in the top nine positions to easily capture the Bud Davis Memorial Cross Country Invitational at Tuba City last Saturday.

Page finished with 21 points en route to its first place win. Host Tuba City Warriors claimed runner-up, finishing with 52 points in the nine-team boy's invitational.

Page's girl's team netted 49 points for its championship. The Lady Sand Devils edged runner-up St. Michael Lady Cardinals, who tallied 51 points, outlasting an 8-team girl's field.

Page head coach Tim Martin said he is proud of the Sand Devils' boys and girls teams.

"The boys team ran without top runner Bowen Martin," Martin said. "We wanted to rest Bowen. He suffered a slight hip injury. The guys stepped up. Morgan Fowler, our number two runner, was the boy's individual champion. Trent Holiday is our number three runner finished second place."

Martin pointed out the Page runners ran a 5K as a workout prior to the races.

Page's Morgan Fowler completed the 5K course in 16:54 for first place. Sand Devil teammate Trent Holiday followed in second place, crossing the finish line in 17:15.

Page's Lance Harris completed the race in 17:39 for fourth place. Rex Martin followed in fifth place, turning in a 17:42. The Sand Devils' fifth scoring runner was Skyler Sandoval in ninth place, clocking a 18:25.

Other runners finishing in the top 10 were Tuba City's Aaron Simien (3rd, 17:31), Tuba City's Isaac Simien (6th, 18:02), Tuba City's Demetrius Daw (7th, 18:03) and TubaCity's Johnson Farrell (10th, 18:27).

Greyhills Academy Ty Poola claimed eighth place in 18:24.

Following Page and Tuba City in the boy's team scoring were Many Farms 100, Greyhills Academy 127, Kayenta Mon ument Valley 132,Pinon 154, St. Michael Indian 162, Ganado 166 and Window Rock 172.

Martin said the Lady Sand Devils are coming around and are starting to race well.

"The girl's did a good job," Martin said. "Nahaniya Fowler race a good race. Her teammates stepped up as well. The girls are coming around."

Page's top finisher was Nahaniya Fowler (3rd, 21:12). Her Page teammates were Miquedah Taliman (7th, 22:14), Sofia Bryan (8th, 22:17), Mikayla Benally (15th, 23:08) and Kodi Tate (16th, 23:11).

Page captured the girl's team title with 49 points, followed closely by St. Michael Indian 51, Tuba City 69, Ganado 92, Many Farms 119, Pinon 162, Window Rock 166 and Kayenta Monument Valley 193.

Pinon's Precious Robinson was the individual girl's champion. Robinson toured the 5K course in 19:22.

St. Michael Indian's Ali Upshaw finished second with a 19:59 time. Other top 10 finishers were Tuba City's Shaelyn Honahni in 21:49. St. Michael Indian's Chiara Holgate (5th, 22:03), Tuba City's Shenelle Zeena (6th, 22:03), Tuba City's Larissa Yazzie (9th, 22:26) and St. Michael Indian's Lynelle Slim (10th, 22:34).

Alchesay Invitational

Led by individual girl's champion, Alisia Honyumptewa, the Chinle Lady Wildcats chalked up 34 points to garner the team title at the Alchesay Cross-Country Invitational in Whiteriver.

Honyumptewa was clocked in 19:55 over the 5K course. Chinle teammates scoring included Nevah Scott (3rd, 22:40), Quintrelle Curley (4th, 22:54), Lesina James (11th, 25:16) and Delt'eebaa Nacona (15th, 26:10).

Other girl's finishing in the top 10 were Valley Sanders' Nizhoni James (2nd, 22:04), Alchesay's Naomi Rustin (5th, 23:15), Holbrook's Kiah Demuth (6th, 24:11), Blue Ridge's Telisa Colelay (7th, 24:17), Alchesay's Tristin Reidhead (24:24), Valley Sanders' Valiyah Yazzie (9th, 24:39), and Holbrook's Abigayle Nez (10th, 24:41).

While Chinle was claiming the girl's team title, finishers include Alchesay 47, Holbrook 75 and Valley Sanders 75. Holbrook's sixth runner finished ahead of Valley Sanders' sixth runner.

The Show Low Cougars finished first place in the boy's division, totaling 43 points. Chinle copped second place with 45 points. Other team scores were Alchesay 58 points, Holbrook 102 points and Valley Sanders 119 points.

Chinle senior Isaiah Honyumptewa was the boy's individual champion. Honyumptewa toured the 5K course in 17:27.
