Chandler took immediate control and never looked back on Friday when they defeated Hamilton, 49-7, to take the Battle for Arizona Avenue for the sixth straight year.

Chandler running back Decarlos Brooks rushed for 192 yards on 18 carries, including a 51-yard touchdown run that put his team up 35-0 in the third quarter.

Brooks took home the MVP trophy for the game, which is part of the Great American Rivalry Series along with over 100 other high school football games across the country.

Chandler pounded the run game the entire night, but were also able to gash Hamilton through the air. Quarterback and BYU-commit Jacob Conover threw for 262 yards and five touchdowns, while completing 16 of his 23 passes.

“We just take it like any other game,” Conover said. “Obviously it’s a rivalry, but we’ve shown dominance the last six years in division games, and it’s not going to stop.”

Conover’s top receiver was senior Daseau Puffer, who caught six passes for 121 yards. Sophomore Jalen Richmond also received for 67 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown, which was one of several big plays in the passing game.

While Hamilton had a rough night, there were some bright spots. The Huskies defense came up with two interceptions, one of which took the ball right back after a fumble of their own.

“They worked extremely hard all week,” Hamilton head coach Mike Zdebski said. “We had a great week of preparation. We came and played for 48 minutes.”

Chandler is now awaiting their draw in the playoffs. They are currently 9-1 and ranked No. 1 in the AIA rankings, which determine playoff seeding. That is unlikely to change after their victory over Hamilton.

Chandler head coach Shaun Aguano saw some things he would like his team to improve on heading into the playoffs.

“Some of the series they were in, I thought we didn’t make plays when we needed to,” Aguano said. “We need to be consistent in order to win another championship. Hopefully we will go back and stay focused throughout the playoffs.”

As for Hamilton, their season likely ended on Friday. The Huskies were ranked No. 17 with a 3-6 record heading into this week’s matchup and are unlikely to move into a playoff spot with the loss.

Their final ranking will be announced on Saturday when the AIA reveals the state playoff bracket. This broadcast can be watched starting at 7 a.m. on AZPreps365.
