A lot of threes went down Tuesday night with Basha and Gilbert tangling on the second day of pool play at the annual Welcome to the Jungle Invite.

As it turned out, Gilbert needed a pair of Paul Maldonado free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the deal as the Tigers held off Basha, 62-60, at Gilbert High.

Maldonado, a junior guard, was torried from three-point range all evening. He connected on 6 of 8 treys, including five in a row during a portion of the second quarter to the third. Gilbert made 11 threes for the evening. Basha, playing from behind most of the game, kept pecking away with the help of threes. The Bears sank nine. They trailed 52-42 with 3:59 to play, but played with a never-say-die mentality that gave them a chance to the buzzer.

Sophomore guard Trenton McLaughin led Basha's balanced offense with 15 points, including three 3s. Tyler Pugh added 13 points (three 3s) and Jake Moore 12 points and Cj Noder 10 points (three 3s).

Senior guard Doc Self got Gilbert rolling early with three first-quarter 3s and finished with 15 points. Jake Ehmann, a transfer from Ohio, added 11 points  doing most of his work inside. Gilbert (2-0) faces Pinnacle (2-0) for that pool's title and a spot in Friday's title game. Pinnacle won the late game Tuesday night with ease, 81-55, over Desert Ridge (0-2).

PERRY 52, CHANDLER 49: Perry rode the offensive prowess of senior guard Jalen Williams in its win. Williams tallied a game-high 30 points, 11 in the fourth quarter. Perry coach Sammy Duane Jr. wasn't pleased with his team's narrow 58-53 win over Williams Field on Monday. And when Chandler broke to a 5-0 lead 96 seconds into Tuesday's game, Duane called time and admonished his team for all to hear. The Pumas regained the lead a couple minutes later. Perry owned double-digit leads in the game, but Chandler managed to pull within striking distance to begin the final quarter.

A layup by Williams with 7:05 left had Perry up 39-32, but the Wolves pecked away and made a game of it, taking a 44-43 lead briefly with 2:20 to play thanks to a Vean Simon (team-high 13 points) three-point shot. Wiiliams put Perry back in front keying a 9-2 run. Chandler had a chance to tie, but a three-point shot by Adrian Chandler was off target as the buzzer sounded. Carl Wilson added 12 points and Mekhi Mason 10 off the bench for Chandler.

Chandler (1-1) faces Williams Field (0-2) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday with Perry (2-0) taking on Westview (1-1) in the evening's finale at 8.

WESTVIEW 72, WILLIAMS FIELD 57: Westview used a strong final four minutes to distance itself from Williams Field, which had closed with three with four minutes to go. Westview's 14-2 run to the final buzzer negated what to that point was a very good second half for the Blackhawks.

Westview's D'Maurian Williams guided his team to a 43-28 lead at halftime with 18 points. Williams was limited to two points in the second half, but teammate Sonny Contreras had two strong halves -- 11 in the first half with three 3s and eight in the second half. Guard Isaiah King, scoreless through three quarters, tallied eight in the final quarter all in the closing run.

Williams Field spread its scoring evenly --Jaeden Bailey (13 points), Caleb Cochrane (11), Camden Plewe (10), Ti Cochrane (10) and Montez Taylor (9).
