Girls hoops: Chinle Lady 'Cats win two of three games

The Chinle Lady Wildcats are two wins and one loss in its four-game homestand.

Chinle, 8-5, completes its four-game homestand on Tuesday at 6 p.m., entertaining the Wingate (New Mexico) Lady Bears in an intrastate freedom game.

Chinle began its homestand with a 46-27 win over the Many Farms Lady Lobos. The Lady Wildcats outlasted the Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs, 52-40, in a 3A North Region contest.

Tuba City 49, Chinle 47

The Tuba City Lady Warriors were in Chinle for a 3A North Region matchup on Saturday. Tuba City chalked up a 49-47 win over the Lady Wildcats.

Chinle held a five-point lead, 15-10, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats continued to lead when the second quarter expired, 27-21, after outscoring the Lady Warriors, 12-11.

The Lady Wildcats and Lady Warriors both scored 10 points apiece in the third quarter. Chinle held a 37-31 advantage at the end of three quarters. Tuba City exploded for 18 points in the fourth quarter. Chinle could muster 10 points.

Chamique Nez knocked down 11 points and Chenille Nodman added 10 points for Tuba City.

"We trailed the game for three quarters," Tuba City head coach Kimberly Williams said. "We were down by six points at the end of the third quarter."

Williams credited the Lady Warriors' defensive effort in the second half.

"In the second half, we were able to create 15 turnovers for Chinle," Williams stated. "I had nine kids who scored and my bench provided big help. They contributed offensively and defensively. I challenged my forwards from here on out that their play makes a big difference in outcomes and they stepped up. We must match guard and post play. Our outside shooting was down. Normally, we can hit those shots but we made it up with inside shooting. We are not a big team, so that means everyone must do their part. They listened and did their job. I am proud of them for that."

Debaa Nacona tallied 13 points, while teammates Grayce Claw and Stacey Begay both netted 10 points apiece for Chinle.

Chinle 52, Kayenta Monument Valley 40

Chinle overcame an eight-point deficit in the first quarter to post a 52-40 victory over the Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs in 3A Norh Region action.

The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Wildcats, 14-6, in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats battled back in the second quarter. Chinle scored 14 points and Kayenta Monument Valley managed two points. The Lady Wildcats took a 20-16 halftime advantage.

Chinle shot well in the third quarter, tallying 13 points. The Lady Mustangs hit for nine markers. The Lady Wildcats and Lady Mustangs both canned seven points in the final eight minutes of the game.

Grayce Claw netted 12 points, followed by Aisha Ashley with 10 points, Debaa Nacona and Stacey Begay both tallied five points apiece for the Lady Wildcats.

For Kayenta Monument Valley, Tayla Nez netted nine points, followed by Jazlyn Lane, Helen Salt and Erynne Sells with six points apiece.

Chinle 46, Many Farms 27

Chinle led from start to finish as the Lady Wildcats chalked up a 46-27 win over the Many Farms Lady Lobos in a freedom game.

Chinle took a four-point lead, 12-8, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Lobos, 10-8, for a 22-16 halftime lead.

The Lady Wildcats increased its lead, 35-18, after outscoring the Lady Lobos, 13-2, in the third period. Chinle tallied 11 points to Many Farms' nine points in the fourth period.

Chinle's Stacey Begay poured in 17 points and Kristen Tso added seven points.

Quandinna Begay tallied eight points and Kahia Lamothe netted seven points for Many Farms.
