Girls, boys hoops: 3A North Region teams in a 'dogfight' for first place

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, 3A North Region teams are in a 'dogfight' for first place and top seed for its regional tournament.

The end of the regular season for 3A North Region teams is February 2. A week later, February 7-9, the regional tournament is scheduled. The first round on February 7 in Kayenta, hosted by Monument Valley High School. The semifinal round on February 8 at Ganado High School. The regional tournament third place and championship on February 9 at Window Rock High School Events Center in Fort Defiance.

3A North Region boy's basketball standings are as follows.

Chinle, 5-0 region, 19-4 overall. Page, 3-0 region, 13-3 overall. Kayenta Monument Valley, 2-2 region, 12-5 overall. Window Rock, 2-1 region, 8-9 overall. Tuba City, 0-5 region, 4-10 overall. Ganado, 0-4 region, 2-14 overall.

3A North Region girl's basketball standings are as follows.

Page, 2-0 region, 13-4 overall. Tuba City, 3-1 region, 12-4 overall. Chinle, 3-2 region, 12-5 overall. Window Rock, 1-1 region, 10-8 overall. Ganado, 1-2 region, 10-9 overall. Kayenta Monument Valley, 0-4 region, 6-12 overall.

Girls 3A North Region

Tuba City 51, Window Rock 36

Tuba City Lady Warriors turned a close game into a 15-point victory, 51-36, over the Window Rock Lady Scouts in an important 3A North Region contest.

A poor shooting fourth quarter doomed Window Rock. Tuba City held a 34-33 lead at the end of the third quarter, before the hot-shooting and a strong defense propelled the Lady Warriors to a victory.

Tuba City held a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Window Rock cut the lead to one point, 23-22, after outscoring the Lady Warriors, 16-13, in the second quarter. The Lady Warriors and Lady Scouts both netted 11 points in the third quarter. Tuba City rattled the cages for 17 points and Window Rock could muster three points in the fourth quarter.

Tuba City head coac Kimberly Williams said the Lady Warriors played with more intensity throughout the contest.

"Our game plan was to stop (Jana) Solee and (Asia) James," Williams said. "Put constant pressure on them. It was a good defensive effort from Jayda (Chee) for guarding (Jana) Solee and (Asia) James. I had four guards Larissa Yazzie, Tiriya Mexican, Mykeya Sheppard and Shaila Dugi) that wore them down and kept the ball out of their hands."

Williams said the Lady Warriors' game plan was to be more aggressive with the whole game, both offensively and defensively.

"We shot better in the second half and especially at the free throw line."

Gracee Curley and Larissa Yazzie both scored 14 points to pace Tuba City offensively. Shiala Dugi added 12 points for the Lady Warriors.

Tuba City improved to 3-1 in region play and 12-4 overall. Tuba City entertains the Winslow Bulldogs, 14-2 overall, 2-0 in region play, this Thursday in a freedom game at 6 p.m.

Asia James canned 14 points and Bayle Talkalai added 12 points for Window Rock. Window Rock, 10-8 overall, 1-1 in region play, hosts Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs, 6-12 overall, 0-4 in region action, this Friday in an important 3A North Region game at 6 p.m.

Girls 3A North Region

Page 53, Ganado 38

The Page Lady Sand Devils outscored the Ganado Lady Hornets all four quarters to post a 53-38 victory in an important 3A North Region game.

The Lady Sand Devils led 11-5 at the end of the firsr quarter. Page increased its lead, 27-17, at the end of the second quarter, after outscoring Ganado, 16-12, in the second period.

The tempo of the game slowed down in the third quarter. Page netted nine points and Ganado scored six points. The Lady Sand Devils increased its lead to 36-23 at the end of the third period. Page outscored Ganado, 17-15, in the fourth quarter.

Amy Yellowman tallied 11 points and Camryn Nockideneh added 10 points for Page.

Page, 13-4 overall, 2-0 in region, hosts the Chinle Lady Wildcats, 12-5 overall, 3-2 in region, this Tuesday in an important 3A North Region game at 6 p.m.

Ganado, 10-9 overall, 1-2 in region play, entertain the Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs, 6-12 overall, 0-4 in region, this Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Girls 3A East Region

Winslow 61, Holbrook 50

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs outscored the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners, 18-10, in the third quarter to turn a three-point lead into the an 11-point victory, 61-50.

Winslow held a 26-23 lead at halftime. Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan made adjustments at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs turned in a big third quarter, canning 18 points. Holbrook could score 10 points. When the third quarter expired, Winslow held a 44-33 lead. Winslow and Holbrook each tallied 17 points apiece during the fourth quarter.

Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan said the Lady Bulldogs and Holbrook played a very good basketball game.

Kelli Mitchell tallied 13 points and Justine Butterfield added 10 points for Winslow.

"My team had a big third quarter, by mixing the inside and outside game," Jordan said. "In additiojn, my team made key different stops in the second half that allowed us to get a solid lead that we were able to hold on to."

Winslow, 14-2 overall, 2-0 in region play, travel to Tuba City, 12-4 overall, 3-1 in region action, to face the Lady Warriors in a freedom game this Thursday.

Madison Chappell netted 13 points and Mateya Aberle scored 12 points to lead Holbrook.

Holbrook, 14-4 overall, 1-1 in region action, host the Snowflake Lady Lobos, 7-10 overall, 2-0 in region play, this Tuesday at 6 p.m. in an important 3A East Region game.

Girls 2A North Region

Many Farms 43, Round Valley 36

The Many Farms Lady Lobos stopped the Round Valley Lady Elks, 43-36, in a 2A North Region contest.

Many Farms held a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Round Valley outscored the Lady Lobos, 15-13. Many Farms continued to lead, 23-21, at halftime.

The Lady Lobos netted 10 points and Round Valley managed four points in the third quarter, taking a 33-25 lead. The Lady Elks outscored the Lady Lobos, 11-10, in the fourth quarter.

Kahia Lamothe tallied 13 points and Quanndinna Begay added 10 points for Many Farms.

Many Farms is 5-10 overall and 4-4 in region play.

Round Valley's Sam Madrid led all scorers with 20 points. Round Valley is 5-9 overall and 3-4 in region action.

Boys 3A North Region

Page 64, Ganado 25

Page took a 17-4 first quarter lead and never looked back, as the Sand Devils posted a 64-25 victory in 3A North Region game.

Page head coach Gary Skubal praised the work of the Sand Devils.

"We did a nie job defensively, holding them to no three-point shots and no quarter scores in double digits," Skubal said. "We also did a good job of pushing the ball and making shots in transition."

Jonah Holiday tallied 15 points, Any Sloan added 11 points, Ben Alvarez netted 10 points and Gabe Gomez canned eight points for Page.

Page, 13-3 overall, 3-0 in region, entertain the Chinle Wildcats, 19-4 overall, 5-0 in region, this Tuesday in an important 3A North Region game at 7:30 p.m.

Ganado, 2-14 overall, 0-4 in region, host the Kayenta Monument Valley Mustangs, 12-5 overall, 2-2 in region, this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
