Rez hoops mania: 3A North Regional girls, boys basketball tournament begins Thursday

Billed as 'Conference of Champions', the 3A North Regional Tournament, consisting of six girls and six boys teams, commences this Thursday at Monument Valley High School's Nash Center in Kayenta.

The stage is set and the teams are ready to rumble, as Rez hoops mania will be in the spotlight. Large crowds are expected as the 'Road to Glendale' begins.

After the completion of first round action, the Regional Tournament shifts to Ganado High School's Hornet Pavilion at Burnside Junction with the semifinals on Friday.

Championship Saturday is scheduled for Window Rock High School's Events Center in Fort Defiance.

Daily admission is $8 per person. Children 3-years and younger will be admitted free of charge. A major sponsor of the Regional Tournament is NTUA Choice Wireless.

Girls

Regular season region champion Page Lady Sand Devils, (10-0 region, 21-4 overall), earned the number one seed. Tuba City Lady Warriors, (6-4 region, 16-7 overall), and Chinle Lady Wildcats, (6-4 region, 15-7 overall), finished in a tie for second place in the region. Tuba City defeated Chinle twice during the season and was awarded number two seed in the tournament. Page and Tuba City earned byes in the tournament as the top two seeds.

No. 5 seed Window Rock Lady Scouts, (2-8 region, 11-14 overall), faces No. 4 seed Ganado Lady Hornets, (5-5 region, 19-11 overall), at 3 p.m. in Kayenta on Thursday. The winner takes on Page in the semifinals at Ganado High School's Hornet Pavilion at Burnside Junction at 6 p.m. on Friday.

No. 3 seed Chinle Lady Wildcats, (6-4 region, 15-7 overall) meets No. 6 seed Monument Valley Lady Mustangs, (1-9 region, 8-17 overall) in Kayenta at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The survivor faces Tuba City in the Final Four at Ganado at 3 p.m. on Friday.

The losers of the semifinal games at Ganado, will meet for third place at Window Rock High School's Events Center in Fort Defiance at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The Regional Tournament championship game is slated for the Events Center at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Boys

Chinle Wildcats, (10-0 region, 24-4 overall), earned the boy's number one seed. Page Sand Devils, (7-3 region, 18-6 overall), is the number two seed. Chinle and Page both earned first round byes in the tournament.

No. 3 seed Window Rock, (6-4 region, 12-12 overall), meets No. 6 seed Ganado, (1-9 region, 4-20 overall) in Kayenta at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The winner faces Page in the Final Four in Ganado at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

No. 4 seed Monument Valley, (5-5 region, 15-10 overall), tangles with No. 5 seed Tuba City, (1-9 region, 5-16 overall), in Kayenta at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The survivor takes on Chinle in semifinals in Ganado at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

The losers of the semifinal games at Ganado will meet for third place at 11:30 a.m. at the Events Center in Fort Defiance on Saturday.

At conclusion of the third place game, the Events Center will be cleared for cleanup, in preparation for the championship games.

The Regional Tournament championship game is scheduled for the Events Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
