Xavier Prep is determined to avenge last year’s state title loss to Valley Vista.

“We believe in ourselves a lot more this year," senior Addie Putnam said. "We really want that [championship] this year, being so close last year.”

Last year’s loss has motivated the team to win the school’s first state title.

“We want revenge almost against ourselves for how we played last year, not that we played bad but we want to play better and win,” Putnam said.

Senior Leilani McIntosh added: “We know that feeling of coming up short and we don’t want to go back there.”

The Gators appear confident going into the playoffs.

“We’re better prepared this year. It would be a nice redemption,” McIntosh said.

Coach Jennifer Gillom said she sees “determination” and more confidence in the girls since playing in the state title game.

The No. 4 ranked Gators (23-3) are in the midst of a seven-game winning streak, playing their best basketball right now.

Gillom praised the leadership her seniors have provided.

“It’s been incredible. I think that’s the difference this year,” Gillom said.

Senior Paris Rasheed-Moore believes the Gators hard work will pay off.

“We can take anyone,” Rasheed Moore said. “It’s going to be a battle to end, but we’re going to come out on top.”

The Gators will play their last regular season game at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the Hamilton Huskies.
