State tennis tournament singles-doubles preview

The quest for individual state tennis titles for boys and girls in singles and doubles in Division I, II and III begins late this week over three days of competition.

First- and second-round play takes place Friday April 26 at venues across the Valley -- mainly Paseo Racquet Club and Gene Autry Sports Complex. That leads to quarterfinals and semifinals Saturday Apri 27. Finals are Monday April 29 at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center.

Here are the top four seeds for the various divisions and some notes on the participants:

BOYS

BOYS NOTES: One singles champ returns to defend his title -- Deer Valley's Oliver Boleratzky. Boleratzky won in D-II last year and competes in D-I this year. He was also D-II singles runner-up in 2017. Two players who won doubles titles last year are back with new partners -- Hamilton's Neil Bhardwaja (D-I) and Catalina Foothills Mason Lee (D-II). Mason Lee is the most decorated player in the field with runner-up finishes in doubles in 2016 and 2017 to go along with a doubles crown last year. Cactus Shadows doubles team of Harry Carrozza and Ryan Hildebrand were D-II doubles runners-up last year and look for the top spot this year. Rincon/University's Ethan Lee was D-I singles runner-up last year and top seed this year. Players who finished third or fourth at state last year -- Arcadia's Rush Williams (3rd in D-II singles); Catalina Foothills Brendan Perry (4th in D-II singles); Sunnyslope's Zach Fernandez (3rd in D-I singles); Brophy's Drew Postillion (4th in D-I doubles); Scottsdale Prep's Jack Swenson (3rd in D-III doubles);  Phoenix Country Day's Eric Emami (4th in D-III singles) and The Gregory School's Wilder Cooke (4th in D-III doubles). Cooke nabbed a 4th-place finish in doubles in 2017 competing at Salpointe. Desert Vista's Austreberto Carlon was third in D-I singles in 2017 and teammate Luke Urlaub took home a fourth-place finish in D-I doubles in 2017.

GIRLS NOTES: Players who won championships last year are: Pusch Ridge's Sofia Fetsis (D-III singles); Desert Mountain's Hailey Stelse (D-I singles) and Josie Frazier and McKenna Koenig (D-I doubles). Fetsis placed third in D-III singles in 2017. Frazier also won D-I singles in 2016. Looking for higher finishes this year are: Xavier Prep's Erica Stutz (D-I doubles runner-up last year). Stutz also placed third (D-I singles in 2017.). Pusch Ridge's Emma Reilly and Colleen Harris (D-II doubles runner-up last year); Gilbert Classical's Katerina Stender (D-III singles runner-up last year); Catalina Foothills Annabelle Mulick (D-II doubles third-place last year); Desert Vista's Rimona Rouf (D-I singles third-place last year); Northland Prep's Bri Biddle and Kate Bailey (D-III doubles fourth-place last year) and Notre Dame Prep's Brooke Belitz (D-II doubles fourth-place last year).
