Cross-Country: Ganado, Page garner Hopi Invitational team titles

Ganado Lady Hornets and Page Sand Devils topped the 19-team girl's and boy's Hopi Invitational, respectively, as the cross-country season began for the northern schools at Keams Canyon.

En route to earning the female varsity team championship, Ganado chalked up 38 points, as the Lady Hornets had four of its five team scoring finishers complete the race in the top seven positions.

Ganado's Marissa Shorty garnered first place, touring the 5K course in 21:58. Lady Hornets teammate Jayla McIntosh claimed runner-up, posting a 22:16.

Lady Hornets' Whitney James copped sixth place, clocking a 22:44. Ganado's LaSundra Baldwin followed in seventh place, crossing the finish line with a 22:46 showing. Ganado's fifth scoring runner was Marissa Smith with a 25:44 time for 39th place.

Tuba City Lady Warriors, 3A North Region foe, settled for second place with 54 points.

The Lady Warriors' top finisher was Shaelyn Honahi, who was timed in 23:22, for 10th place. Tuba City's Larissa Yazzie was timed in 24:00, finishing 14th place.

Other Tuba City scoring runners were Shenelle Zeena, (15th, 24:01), Rochelle Jackson, (16th, 24:15), and Kailer Reid, (23rd, 25:05).

Five-time defending state champion Page finished the meet with 45 points. The Sand Devils had three of its top five finish in the nine positions. Page's fourth and fifth runners were 14th and 17th place.

Trent Holiday was Page's top finisher, claiming runner-up, posting an 18:18. Sand Devils' Rex Martin was a close third place, crossing the finish line in 18:20. Page's Shayden Begay was timed in 18:46 for 9th place.

Sand Devils' Gavyn Begay turned in a 19:02 time for 14th place. Page's fifth scoring runner was Colton Yazzie, who was clocked in 19:07 for 17th place.

Zuni, New Mexico finished second place in the team scoring, tallying 58 points.

Boy's varsity individual champion, Zuni's DeShawn Goodwin, negotiated the 5K terrain in 17:40. T-birds teammate Kameron Eustace copped fifth place with am 18:34 time.

Zuni's Jacy Edaakie was clocked in 19:01 for 13th place. T-birds' Breydon Othole settled for 18th place with a 19:09 time. Zuni's Jarek Chimoni-Zunie was the T-birds' fifth scoring runner in 21st place and a 19:17 clocking.

Girl's finishing in the top 10 included Wheaton Smith, Coconino, (3rd, 22:24); Temyra Bia, Chinle, (4th, 22:28); Neveah Scott, Chinle, (5th, 22:37); Kaelynn Ashley, Coconin, (8th, 22:50); and LaShawnda Yazzie, Page, (9th, 23:03).

Girl's team scores were Coconin 80, Page 101, Alchesay 142, Zuni 151, Chinle 168, Window Rock 194, Many Farms 244, Holbrook 245, Hopi 309, Show Low 363 and Greyhills Academy 420.

Boy's finishing in the top 10 included Micah Slivers, Ganado, (4th, 18:24); Beau Williams, Show Low, (6th, 18:38); Detmetrius Daw, Tuba City, (7th, 18:42); Milson Tessay, Hopi, (8th, 18:45); and Mason Hall, Show Low, (10th, 18:52).

Boy's team scores were Hopi 93, Ganado 108, Show Low 132, Many Farms 217, Tuba City 221, Coconino 234, Chinle 246, Alchesay 250, Window Rock 293, Holbrook 296, Greyhills Academy 307, Pinon 364, Rock Point 450, and Shonto 513.
