In the past, Centennial has welcomed and beaten top schools across the country such as Nevada's Bishop Gorman and Florida's St. Thomas Aquinas. However, that was not the case against defending national champion Mater Dei of California.

“We’ve done that to a few people ourselves,” said Centennial head coach Richard Taylor. "If you do it long enough, eventually you are going to get yours.”

The Monarchs (3-0) shut out the Coyotes (1-1) in the second half en route to a 71-21 win.

The Monarchs controlled the game on both sides of the field led by star quarterback and USC commit Bryce Young.

Young torched the Coyotes completing 84 percent of his passes for seven touchdowns and 538 yards.

With seven new starters on defense the Coyotes managed to sack Young only twice.

Despite the one-sided affair, Taylor took the loss as a learning experience for his team. “I guarantee we became a better team tonight; we had some guys who really played their hearts out.”

One player who made an impact for the Coyotes was running back-safety Jaydin Young. The senior, who had a 54-yard reception, respects the former national champs. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase everything you got, so it’s just good to get out here and compete against the best.

Another senior standout was tight end Kaeden Miller. Miller broke free for a 55-yard completion before being stopped at the goal line. Quarterback Jonathan Morris scored  to give the Coyotes their third and final touchdown late in the second half.

The Monarchs scored 37 unanswered points to close out the game.

"We’re glad that we played them," Taylor said. "We became a better team and we will be ready to go for next week.

The Coyotes go on the road for the first time this season as they take on the Cienega Bobcats (1-1) Friday.
