Football: Monument Valley, Alchesay continue winning ways

The Kayenta Monument Valley Mustangs and Alchesay Falcons continued its winning ways in prep football action.

MONUMENT VALLEY MUSTANGS 46, CHINLE WILDCATS 12

Monument Valley knocked off the Chinle Wildcats, 46-12, in a 3A North Region ball game.

With the victory, Monument Valley improved its overall season record to 3-3, more importantly an undefeated 2-0 mark in region play.

Monument Valley travels to Tuba City, (0-2, 1-6), this Friday in a region contest at 7 p.m.

Monument Valley head coach Bryan Begay said he is proud of the win. Begay said not just because of the win, but how the Mustangs won the game.

"To start the game and hold the lead the entire game," Begay said. "We played the majority of our roster in the fourth quarter. The way our defense played the entire game. There were certainly opportunities to not come back. Certainly things didn't look good in the second quarter of that game .... the whole second quarter. I think our guys showed a lot of resiliency."

Monument Valley quarterback Andrew Sheppard entered the end zone on a 5 yard rushing touchdown. Roberto Flores completed the 2 point PAT for an 8-0 lead.

The Mustangs added a touchdown in the second quarter. Albrandon Byjoe hauled in a 62 yard touchdown pass from Sheppard. Cauy Benally tacked on the 2 point PAT for a 16-0 advantage.

Chinle battled back, avoiding a shutout in the second quarter. The Wildcats scored its first touchdown of the game, when Nicholas Begay rushed 39 yards.

Prior to halftime, Monument Valley drove the ball down the field. Mustangs' Sheppard called his own number, scampering into the end from 17 yards for a touchdown. The PAT failed. Monument Valley held a 22-6 lead.

In the third quartrer, the Mustangs added a six-pointer. Cairen Calamity bolted into the end zone from 6 yards for a touchdown. Calamity tacked on the 2 point PAT for a 30-6 advantage.

Monument Valley's Cauy Betony scored from 4 yards our. Sheppard added the 2 point PAT for a 38-6 lead.

Sheppard tallied Monument Valley's final touchdown of the game. Sheppard scored on a 60 run. Ryles Holiday scored the 2 point PAT.

Chinle's Darren Woody hauled in a 33 yard touchdown, ending the Wildcats' scoring drought.

Monument Valley's Sheppard completed 7-of-21 passes for 151 yards, one touchdown. Sheppard rushed for 82 yards on 9 carries and three touchdowns. He completed one 2 point PAT.

Calamity rushed for 83 yards on 18 rushes and one touchdown. Betony had 40 yards on 6 carries and one touchdown.

Mustangs' Joshua Holiday picked off one pass. Simeon Thinn recorded 10 tackles, while Stephen Hale had five tackles and Bradley Smallcanyon had five tackes and 2.5 quarterback sacks.

Monument Valley coach Begay said he likes the physical effort that his players are giving. He said he is proud of the effort.

"We are not playing as many players as we would like," Begay said. "Sometimes when guys play more snaps than you'd like to, you may see lack of effort or guys taking plays off and our guys are giving us such great physical effort.

ALCHESAY FALCONS 66, ROCK POINT 6

In 2A North Little Colorado Region contest, Alchesay posted a 66-6 victory over the Rock Point Cougars.

Alchesay is 4-0 in region and 5-2 overall. The Falcons will be at Tuba City to face the Greyhills Academy Knights, (0-4, 0-6) this Friday at 7 p.m. for a region contest.

Rock Point, (1-3, 1-6), host the Pinon Eagles, (1-3, 1-5), this Friday at 7 p.m. for a region game.

Alchesay raced to a 30-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Falcons added 22 points in the second quarter for a 52-0 halftime lead. Alchesay scored 6 points in the third quarter and 8 points in the fourth period.

Alchesay junior Davin Parker rushed for 163 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. Junior Rydez Way added 79 yards on the ground on 7 carries, scoring three touchdpwns and two PAT's. Senior Elisha Walker chalked up 53 yards on two carries, scoring a pair of touchdowns and four PAT's.

Falcons' senior quarterback Ryan Quintero and senior J.T. Kessay each scored a touchdown apiece. Quintero rushed for 8 yards and Kessay had 12 rushes.

Senior Isaac Lupe, junior Fredrico Riley and Eli Thompson each tallied two PAT's on the night.
