From Southern Arizona:

Salpointe closed out the regular season on Thursday with a win at Quarry Pines on the par-36 front nine. Freshman Carlos Astiazaran led the Lancers with a 1-under 35 and his teammates Danny McQuade and Max Krueger came in two shots back along with Sabino standout RayJ Ramirez.

Astiazaran finished his freshman season ranked No. 15 in Division II while Walden Grove junior Gabriel Escalera enters the state playoffs ranked No. 5 and Ironwood Ridge Jarrod Johnson is ranked No. 14. Ramirez is ranked No. 20.

As a team, the Lancers are ranked No. 5 and Ironwood Ridge is ranked No. 8. Salpointe won the Section I title and No. 21 Walden Grove won the Section II championship.

Section champions are not guaranteed a state berth so only Salpointe and Ironwood Ridge are slated for the D-II state playoffs scheduled for Oct. 28-29 at the Omni Tucson National. There will be a one-day play-in tournament for the final two team spots available.

Salpointe and Ironwood Ridge automatically qualify five golfers each and those golfers will be joined by Escalera, Ramirez and Canyon del Oro senior Andrew Rivas. Sabino freshman Jake Myre and Mountain View junior Devin Ackermann are on opposite ends of the 18-man cutline so that will be too close to call until the numbers are finalized.

For D-I, Cienega junior Daniel Henely and Buena senior Isaac Ruiz are safe bets for at-large berths from Southern Arizona while Cienega junior Diego Guerrero appears to be one spot out of the running. There are no D-I teams from Southern Arizona in the state playoffs on the boy’s or girl’s side but Tucson junior Angelica Martinez has qualified as an individual. Her teammate, sophomore Myranda Moreno, is currently one spot beyond the projected cut.

The D-I state tournament is scheduled for Nov. 4-5 at the Omni.

No. 2 Ironwood Ridge won Section I over No. 4 Catalina Foothills and No. 8 Salpointe while No. 23 Cienega took the Section II championship. Only the top ten teams are in the D-II playoffs so Rincon/UHS junior Maddie Greene is in as an individual along with Canyon del Oro junior Madeline Fay and Sahuaro junior Cassidy Morrow.

Catalina Foothills senior Maya Benita is ranked No. 3. Benita has committed to play for the University of Arizona. Ironwood Ridge freshman Zoe Newell is No. 7, Ironwood Ridge sophomore Raina Ports is No. 8 and Salpointe sophomore Mackenzie McRee in No. 9. McRee is the defending state champion.
