Girl's basketball: Winslow 'Dogs edge Flagstaff Eagles, 49-47. in hard fought opener

In a hard fought girl's basketball opener, the Winslow Bulldogs edged the Flagstaff Eagles, 49-47, in a freedom game played at Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow on Tuesday night.

Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan said he was pleased with the Lady Bulldogs' victory. Jordan said the Lady Bulldogs played hard throughout the four quarters of action.

"This was a hard fought (season) opening game by both teams," Jordan said. "I am pleased with my team's defense and how my reserves stepped up."

Winslow shot well during the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs knocked down 18 points during the initial stanza. Winslow's defense stepped up as Flagstaff could muster seven points.

Flagstaff stormed back in the second quarter. The Eagles poured in 16 points. Winslow tallied eight points. Winslow held a 26-23 halftime lead.

Flagstaff knocked down 17 points, while Winslow managed nine points in the third quarter. Flagstaff gained the lead, 40-35, when the third quarter expired.

Winslow pulled off a victory, as the Lady Bulldogs canned 14 points and Flagstaff netted seven points in the fourth frame.

Winslow sophomore guard rattled the cages with a game high 17 points. A pair of Winslow senior posts, Andrea Willeto and Aliyah Vogele both scored 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Miya Verse tallied 16 points and Emma Doskiez poured in 13 points for Flagstaff.
