Basketball Hoops: Window Rock boys lose; Lady Scouts victorious

Window Rock Scouts dropped a 54-52 decision over Northwest Christian in pool play at the Sedona Scorpion Basketball Invitational, while the Lady Scouts outscored Valley Sanders Lady Pirates, 13-0, in the five-minute overtime period to post a 63-50 victory on Thursday.

NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 54, WINDOW ROCK 52

Window Rock led for three quarters, before Northwest Christian outscored the Scouts, 18-14, in the fourth quarter to post a 54-52 victory.

The Scouts took a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Northwest Christian outscored Window Rock, 15-8, cutting the Scouts' lead to six points, 27-21,

Northwest Christian canned 15 points in the third quarter, while Window Rock hit for 11 points. The Scouts held a 38-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. Northwest Christian poured in 18 points and Window Rock knocked down 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Cauy Silversmith led Window Rock with a game high 26 points.

Logan Moser tallied 21 points to pace Northwest Christian.

"It's winter tournament time, so I'm giving my substitutes time in the game to developm" said Window Rock head coach Tom Bizardi. "This is a tournament that will give us five good games, so I want to try and develop my bench to get ready for the conference (3A North Region). I'm glad the young men are developing the offense and defense together."

Window Rock plays two games today in pool play in the tournament. The Scouts faces Mingus Union at 10:30 a.m. The Scouts meets Snowflake at 5:30 p.m.

Northwest Christian takes on Snowflake at 10:30 a.m. and plays against Mingus Union at 5:30 p.m. today.

GIRLS

WINDOW ROCK 63, VALLEY SANDERS 50 (OT)

Window Rock Lady Scouts held Valley Sanders Lady Pirates scoreless during the five minute overtime period to post a 63-50 victory in Sanders on Thursday.

Valley Sanders raced out to a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Scouts, 14-11, for a 36-26 halftime advantage.

Window Rock battled back in the third quarter. The Lady Scouts tallied 10 points to the Lady Pirates' five points. Valley Sanders continued its lead, 41-36, at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Scouts knocked down 15 points to the Lady Pirates' nine points in the fourth quarter, sending the game into overtime, knotted at 50-50. Window Rock netted 13 points and held Valley Sanders scoreless during the overtime period.

Topping Window Rock offensively were Jana Solee with 17 points and Shinezbi added 14 points.

Nizhoni James poured in 19 points and Dana Yazzie canned 15 points for Valley Sanders.

"(During the) first half, we were flat and shots were not going in as we wanted," said Window Rock head coach Sharon Toadecheenie. "(During the) second half, we adjusted our defense and players coming off the bench helped defensively and used (their) quickness. Overall, we executed well (in the) second half."
