Coyote Classic Soccer Invite - Day 5

The A Division boys portion of the annual Coyote Classic Soccer Invite determined its four semifinalists Thursday after completing the final five matches of pool play at Campo Verde High School.

Host school Campo Verde, Chandler, Casteel and Perry were the quartet advancing with all four posting victories to punch their ticket.

The A Division boys semifinals are bright and early Saturday morning starting with top-seed Campo Verde taking on #4 Casteel at 8 a.m. and #2 Chandler battling #3 Perry at 10 a.m. The final pits the winners the same day at 4 p.m.

Here are highlights of the advancing teams matches from Thursday:

Casteel 3, Highland 0: The Colts (2-0-1) scored all their goals in the final 15 minutes to defeat the Hawks (2-1). 

Casteel, which dominated possession vs. Highland, finally scored as time wound down in the second half. Junior Kaden Cameron snapped a 0-0 tie in the 65th minute knocking home a rebound. Sophomore Jacob Aguayo made it 2-0 in the 77th minute on a rebound at the goal mouth. The final goal was tallied by senior Jake Calimpong in the 79th minute.

Perry 4, South Mountain 1: The Pumas (2-0-1) scored twice in the late to pull away from the Jaguars (0-3) and win their bracket over Highland (2-1) and Red Mountain (2-1). 

Perry built a 2-0 lead by early in the second half (goals by Kyle Brereton and Hayden Jaramillo), but South pulled within 2-1 with 25 minutes left. Jarmillo's second goal on a penalty kick made it 3-1 and the final dagger came from Joey Barta.

Campo Verde 5, Mesa 0: The Coyotes (3-0) posted their third pool-play shutout and denied the Jackrabbits (2-1) a berth in the semifinals.

Five players scored for Campo Verde. The Coyotes were up 1-0 on a goal in the fifth minute by Nikolas Pallozzi. Four minutes later Campo survived a rapid-fire assault from Mesa in deep in the box with Coyotes' defenders defending the first two salvos and keeper Jacob Zimmerman snaring the third. 

Campo added two more goals in the 13th and 19th minutes. The goals were by Alejandro Reyes and Drew Christensen, respectively. Campo completed the wn with goal in the 65th minute (Jorge Chavez) and 71st minute (Owen Callaghan).

Chandler 2, Westwood 1: The Wolves (3-0) dominated the match, but needed to score twice in the final 15 minutes to edge the Warriors (1-2). 

After Westwood stunned Chandler with the first goal (tallied by forward Jerry Juarez from 25 yards out) in the 64th minute, the Wolves' used a penalty kick from Josue Saenz in the 75th minute to tie and the game-winner in the 78th minute from 20 yards out by Josh Leal for the win.

Chandler was methodical in going unbeaten in its pool matches winning by scores of 3-2, 3-1 and 2-1. 

In Divison A girls matches, the final quarterfinal spots open went to Perry, Highland and Casteel. Perry beat Highland, 2-0; Casteel topped Desert Ridge, 4-1.

That sets this quarterfinal schedule for Friday -- all matches at Campo Verde HS:

10 a.m. - Chaparral vs. Basha; 11:45 a.m. - Desert Vista vs. Campo Verde; 1:30 p.m. - Perry vs. Casteel; 3:15 p.m. - Pinnacle vs. Highland.
