Girls, boys hoops: Page stops Chinle in 3A North Region contest

The Page Lady Sand Devils improved to 11-2 overall, more importantly chalked up its first win, 1-0, in the 3A North Region with a 50-41 win over the Chinle Lady Wildcats in Page on Tuesday night.

Chinle dropped to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in 3A North Region competition.

Page and Chinle were tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. Page rattled the cages for 11 points, while Chinle netted two points. Page led, 17-8, at halftime.

The Lady Sand Devils stepped up in the third period, knocking down 19 points. Meanwhile the Lady Wildcats poured in 11 points. Page held a 36-19 advantage at the end of the third frame. Chinle battled back during the fourth quarter. The Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Sand Devils, 22-14.

Neve Redhair tallied 13 points and Camryn Nockideneh added 12 points in a winning effort for Page.

Chinle's Aisha Ashley led all scorers, pouring in 19 points.

"We're still not cpnverting when we need to," said Chinle head coach Fran McCurtain. "We finally saw some light in the fourth quarter from the starters."

McCurtain said the Lady Wildcats stepped up defensively.

"We did an awesome job on defense, but we traded too many points instead of making definite stops," McCurtain said.

Chinle travels to Many Farms to face the Lady Lobos on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for a freedom game.

Page will be on the road at Pinon for its next game on January 9 for a freedom contest at 6 p.m.

BOYS

PAGE 60, CHINLE 48

The Page Sand Devils stopped the Chinle Wildcats, 60-48, in a 3A North Region ball game in Page on Tuesday night.

Page took a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. In a close scoring in the second period, the Wildcats outscored the Sand Devils, 16-15. The Sand Devils continued its lead, 30-27 at halftime.

The Wildcats netted 18 points to the Sand Devils' 13 points in the third quarter. Page scored an impressive 17 points, while Chinle managed three points in the fourth quarter.

Trent Holiday and Jonah Holiday both scored 19 points to pace Page.

Cooper Burbank and Curtis Begay both tallied 11 points and Colin Yazzie added 10 points for Chinle.

Page improved to 12-1 overall and 1-0 in 3A North Region. The Sand Devils will be at Pinon to face the Eagles on January 9.

Chinle dropped to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in 3A North Region games. Chinle will be on the road to face the Pinon Eagles on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for a freedom game.

"We didn't play with poise, especially in the fourth quarter," said Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza. "That lead us to a number of turnovers and that lead to points for Page."
