3A girls, boys hoops: Window Rock, Chinle, Holbrook victorious

3A GIRLS HOOPS

WINDOW ROCK 52, GANADO 50

No. 10 Window Rock Lady Scouts edged No. 3 Ganado Lady Hornets, 52-50, in a thrilling finish in the Hornet Pavilion at Burnside Junction in 3A North Region play on Tuesday night.

Window Rock raced out to a 16-1 first quarter lead. Ganado battled back in the second period, canning 15 points, while Window Rock managed six points. Window Rock lead 22-16 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets knocked down 16 points and the Lady Scouts canned 11 points during the third stanza. Window Rock lead, 33-32, at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Scouts outscored the Lady Hornets, 19-18, during the fourth period.

Michelene Coleman poured in 14 points and Abigail Benally added 10 points for Ganado.

Ganado, (5-2 region, 21-3 overall),  will be on the road at No. 7 Tuba City, (4-3 region, 15-7 overall),  on January 30 for its next game.

Jana Solee rattled the cages with 15 points for Window Rock. Shinezbi Teller added 13 points for the Lady Scouts.

"We jump start in the first quarter," said Window Rock head coach Sharon Toadecheenie. "We played with high intensity. We shot fairly well from the free throw line. Everybody contributed to the win."

Window Rock, (3-3 region, 14-6 overall),  entertains No. 11 Chinle Lady Wildcats, (5-3 region, 13-7 overall),  this Friday in the Events Center in Fort Defiance in an important 3A North Region matchup.

3A GIRLS HOOPS

CHINLE 51, KAYENTA MONUMENT VALLEY 39

Despite a sluggish start, No. 11 Chinle Lady Wildcats knocked off No. 28 Kayenta Monument Valley Lady Mustangs, 51-39, in a 3A North Region girl's basketball game on Tuesday night.

Chinle's senior players bidded farewell to its fans and to its venue, Wildcat Den, during Senior Night.

Kayenta Monument Valley took a 9-7 advantage when the first quarter expired. Chinle battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Mustangs, 14-4, taking a 21-13 halftime lead.

The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Wildcats, 11-10, in the third period. Chinle lead at halftime, 31-24. The Lady Wildcats netted 20 points to the Lady Mustangs' 15 points, during the fourth period.

Angel Holiday tallied 15 points and Tierra Sandoval added 13 points for Kayenta Monument Valley.

Tea Murray poured in 12 points, followed by Meishyla Begay and Aisha Ashley with 10 points apiece for Chinle.

Chinle head coach Fran McCurtain said the Lady Wildcats didn't play to its poential, even on its special night, Senior Night.

"We won and agreed that it wasn't our best, but even the girls kept their heads up and continued to play," McCurtain said. "We had wasy too many turnovers and it didn't help with our offense. Our defense was what continued to help push our girls to finish the game. It was surely the last home game for our seniors before we head to Window Rock on Friday."

Chinle, (5-3 region, 13-7 overall),  will be at No. 10 Window Rock, (3-3 region, 14-6 overall), for a 3A North Region game on January 31 at 6 p.m.

Kayenta Monument Valley, (0-7 region, 5-15 overall), entertains No. 6 Page, (4-3 region, 15-5 overall), on January 30 at 6 p.m.

3A GIRLS HOOPS

HOLBROOK 57, SHOW LOW 34

No. 14 Holbrook Roadrunners outlasted the Show Low Cougars, 57-34, in 3A East Region girl's basketball action on Tuesday night.

Holbrook took a five point advantage, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter. The Roadrunners extended its lead, 28-21, at halftime, after outscoring the Cougars, 12-10, in the second period.

Holbrook outscored Show Low, 12-4, in the third quarter. The Roadrunners extended its lead to 40-24 at the end of the third quarter. Holbrook netted 17 points to Show Low's nine points in the fourth quarter.

Cody Watson was Show Low's leading scorer with 10 points.

Matehya Aberle and Desire Bain each tallied 16 points for Holbrook. Madison Chappell added 10 points for Holbrook.

"We played solid defense in the second half," said Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins. "We also shot the ball well in this game, which always helped. Show Low played hard and they have an exceptional point guard, who is very good."

3A BOYS HOOPS

HOLBROOK 59. SHOW LOW 45

In a 3A East Region contest, No. 10 Holbrook Roadrunners defeated the Show Low Cougars, 59-45, on Tuesday night.

Holbrook raced out to a 13-4 first quarter lead. The Roadrunners outscored the Cougars, 22-11, for a 35-15 halftime advantage.

Show Low battled back in the third quarter, netting 13 points. The Roadrunners canned 10 points. Holbrook increased its lead to, 45-28. Show Low tallied 17 points and Holbrook scored 14 points during the fourth quarter.

Kobi Koerperich rattled the cages for 21 points and Eric Baldonado added 11 points for Holbrook.

3A BOYS HOOPS

KAYENTA MONUMENT VALLEY 70, CHINLE 54

No. 17 Kayenta Monument Valley Mustangs shocked No. 9 Chinle Wildcats, 70-54, on its home court, Wildcat Den, in 3A North Region action on Senior Night on Tuesday night.

Current Kayenta Monument Valley head coach Richard Beverly returned to the Wildcat Den, where he served as an assistant coach to Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza last year.

Chinle held a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kayenta Monument Valley outscored Chinle, 19-16, in the second period, for a 30-29 halftime atvantage.

The Mustangs tallied 18 points to the Wildcats' 10 points in the third period. Kayenta Monument Valley held a 48-39 lead. The Mustangs netted 22 points to the Wildcats' 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Albrandon Byjoe tallied 22 points, followed by Maloney with 18 points and Robert Flores added 12 points or Kayenta Monument Valley.

Cooper Burbank canned 17 points and Curtis Begay chipped in with 12 points for Chinle.

"We did a poor job on both ends of the court," said Mendoza. "Defensively, we could not stop them. Offensively, we didn't run the offense. MV outhustled us in all areas of the game."

Chinle, (5-3 region, 17-9),  will be at Window Rock, (3-3 region, 13-10 overall) to face the Scouts on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Kayenta Monument Valley, (4-3 region, 10-10 overall) entertains No. 2 Page, (6-1 region, 19-2 overall), on January 30 at 7:30 p.m.

3A BOYS HOOPS

WINDOW ROCK 63, GANADO 52

No. 21 Window Rock Scouts posted a 63-52 victory over No. 36 Ganado Hornets in 3A North Region action in the Hornet Pavilion at Burnside Junction on Tuesday night.

Window Rock took a two-point lead, 16-14, at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets outscored the Scouts, 13-11, tying the game, 27-27, at halftime.

Window Rock netted 16 points and Ganado canned six points in the third quarter, as the Scouts took a 43-33 lead at the end of the third period. The Scouts tallied 20 ponts to the Hornets' nine point in the fourth quarter.

Quincy Smith knocked down 19 points and Cauy Silversmith added 16 points for Window Rock.

"We came out complacent, but regrouped after halftime by executing the offense," said Window Rock head coach Tom Bizardi.

Window Rock, (3-3 region, 13-10 overall) entertains Chinle Wildcats, (5-3 region, 17-9 overall), in a 3A North Region game on Friday in the Events Center in Fort Defiance at 7:30 p.m.

Ganado, (1-6 region, 4-17 overall) will be on the road at No. 24 Tuba City, (2-5 region, 10-11 overall), on January 30 in a 7:30 p.m. 3A North Region game.
