3A girls, boys hoops: Chinle Lady 'Cats, stuns Ganado, 54-40

3A GIRLS HOOPS;

CHINLE 54, GANADO 40

In 3A North Region girl's basketball action at Burnside Junction, the Chinle Lady Wildcats stunned the Ganado Lady Hornets, 54-40, on Tuesday night.

Chinle completed its regular season with a 6-4  3A North Region slate and 14-8 overall. The Wildcats will await this Saturday's 3A North Region final regular season game to determine who they will face in next week's regional tournament.

Ganado, 6-3 in 3A North Region standings and 22-4 overall, meets the Hopi Lady Bruins in Keams Canyon this Thursday and at Page this Saturday.

Chinle took an 11-4 first quarter lead. Chinle and Ganado both scored 13 points in the second quarter. The Lady Wildcats took a 24-17 halftime advantage.

Ganado outscored Chinle, 14-13, in the third period. The Lady Wildcats held a 37-31 lead at the end of the third period. Chinle canned 17 points and Ganado settled for nine points during the fourth quarter.

Meishyla Begay poured in 17 points for Chinle. Aisha Ashley added 15 points and Tea Murray tallied 14 points for the Lady Wildcats.

Jayla McIntosh canned 12 points to pace Ganado.

"(We) played man-to-man (defense) thw whole night and although Ganado seemed within reach of taking the lead, we kept our composure and continued to work. Our post got to the line and had a much better shooting night than we did against Window Rock. (The) girls did awesome for their last regular season game. Now we wait to see where we will rank after this week and wait for other teams to finish their season.

3A GIRLS HOOPS

HOLBROOK 52, WINSLOW 34

The Holbrook Roadrunners outlasted the Winslow Lady Bulldogs, 52-34, in a 3A East Region girl's basketball game on Tuesday night.

Holbrook held a 9-6 first quarter lead. The Roadrunners netted 18 points, while the Lady Bulldogs canned nine points. Holbrook took a 27-15 halftime lead.

The Roadrunners netted 15 points to Winslow's 13 points for a 42-29 advantage. Holbrook canned 10 points to Holbrook's six points during the fourth quarter.

Desirae Bain knocked down 14 points, while teammates Terry Nez and Matehya Aberle both added 11 points for Holbrook.

Oniah Barton Paddock and Andrea Willeto both scored eight points for Winslow.

"Holbrook played very good defense tonight, causing my team to turnover the basketball," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan.

3A BOYS HOOPS

CHINLE 79, GANADO 36

The Chinle Wildcats completed its regular season with a 79-36 victory over the Ganado Hornets in a 3A North Region boy's basketball game in the Hornet Pavilion at Burnside Junction on Tuesday night.

Chinle took a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats extended its lead to 40-14 halftime advantage, after outscoring the Hornets, 18-4, in the second stanza.

The Wildcats canned 20 points and the Hornets tallied 15 points in the third period. Chinle held a 60-29 lead, Chinle nailed 19 points to Ganado's seven points in the fourth period.

Cooper Burbank tallied 19 points, Colin Yazzie added 14 points, Payton Wagner poured in 10 points and Brayden Ahasteen netted nine points for Chinle.

Lane Uentillie lead Ganado with 16 points.

"A great team effort on both ends of the court," said Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza. "We were able to play everyone."
