Scottsdale Christian's bid to send longtime head coach Bob Fredericks out with an eighth title, ended a game short.

No. 3 Trivium Prep on the flip side punched its ticket to the school's first ever title game, outlasting the second-seeded Eagles, 59-57, in double overtime in a 2A boys semifinal game at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Trivium Prep takes on Rancho Solano Prep on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the title at VMC.

Trivium's Jake Schleifer connected on a 12-foot jumper for the go-ahead basket with 48 seconds left in overtime. Scottsdale Christian got off three shots over two possessions before the final buzzer, but couldn't convert. Hugo Santa Cruz added the final point for the Crimson Knights with a free throw with two seconds left. He missed the second and time ran out on the Eagles.

Fredericks announced at the beginning of the season he would step down from coaching the boys after 35 seasons. He's coached the girls basketball team as well the past couple years and plans on going forward mentoring the girls. Scottsdale Christian was the defending 2A champs. Fredericks won 782 games in his boys coaching.

Trivium Prep's Jake Taylor scored 13 of 16 team-high points in the second half and overtimes. Schleifer was next with 12 points and eight rebounds and Santa Cruz chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Moody paced Scottsdale Christian with 16 points. He was joined by Matthew Fan (11 points) and Braden Wales (10).

#5 Rancho Solano Prep 38, #1 Alchesay 36: James Dienes scored on a controversial putback as time expired lifting the Mustangs (17-14) over the hard-luck Falcons (29-5) in the other 2A boys semifinal. Alchesay reached the championship game each of the last three years losing last year to Scottsdale Christian, to Rancho Solano in 2018 and to Gilbert Christian in 2017.

Dienes had given Rancho a 36-34 lead with 1:18 to play with a nice baby hook in the lane. Alchesay evened it in the final minute on a runner by Elisha Walker. Rancho got the final possession with 10 seconds left and got off a three shots with the last one coming from Dienes. Alchesay disagreed with the call the shot beat the buzzer and wanted replay. Replay is only allowed in a championship final if television replay is available.

Dienes paced Rancho with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Alchesay's leading scorer Malachai Harris also totaled 10 points battling foul trouble all game. He picked up four fouls in the first half and fouled out with just more than seven minutes left in regulartion. Harris averaged 21 points a game this season.
