Gilbert High's boys soccer team got the looks and not the results in the first half, but that turned around quickly in the second half.

The Tigers scored three goals in an eight-minute span of to open the second half and cruised to a 5-0 victory over Mountain Pointe in Pool A competition at the annual Tempe Diablos Soccer Invitational at the Tempe Sportx Complex.

The Gilbert-Mountain Pointe match decided Pool A's representative so Gilbert advances to Thursday's semifinals where it will face Pool B champ Chandler at 6 p.m. Chandler (2-2-1) won Pool B with a 2-0-1 record and beat Desert Mountain in its final pool match, 1-0.

Gilbert improved to 6-0 for the season. The Tigers won three power-point matches last week and have continued that success in the tournament with a trio of shutout wins over Westwood, Basha and Mountain Pointe.

"We're having a tough time with the surface," Gilbert coach Jeff Perry said. "We're not hitting the ball cleanly a lot of times. But other teams are having the same problem. We had some good looks in the first half, and didn't get many to go. The second half we did."

Gilbert had about a half-dozen chances in the first 10 or 15 minutes of Wednesday's match, but  found the back of the net once. That was in the fourth minute when Kahlin Gonzales won a scramble for a loose ball in the box and tapped it Jesse Aleman's way. Aleman knocked it home for the early advantage.

Mountain Pointe didn't mount much of an attack in the first half having to defend its end most of the way. Gilbert took the Pride out of the match with goals by Cody Schultz (43rd minute), Emmanuel Castillo (50th minute) and Schultz again (51st minute). Schultz also had a goal negated in that span by an offside call.

Gilbert substituted liberally the final 25 minutes. The Tigers added their final goal in the 75th minute, scored by Anthony Arellano.

The other boys semifinal, also set for Thursday at 6 p.m., will feature Hamilton against Corona del Sol. Hamilton (5-0) won Pool C with a 3-0 record by topping Desert Vista, 6-1. Corona del Sol won Pool D with a perfect 2-1 mark and had to go to a third tie-breaker with Highland and Perry to come out on top. The Gilbert-Chandler winner meets the Hamilton-Corona del Sol winner for the championship on Friday at 6 p.m.

In the girls bracket, Pool A winner Gilbert (5-0) will face Pool B winner Corona del Sol (3-1-2) in one of Thursday's 6 p.m. semifinals. Gilbert swept its Pool A matches, all via shutout, to advance. Gilbert  beat Hamilton late Wednesday night, 3-0,  to land its spot and end defending state champion Hamilton's unbeaten streak dating back to last season at  30 games.

Corona del Sol won a wacky Pool B  that featured six matches, five of which ended in ties. Corona was the only school in its pool (Chandler, Perry and Red Mountain were the others) to win a match. Corona's win over Chandler on Tuesday earned it a berth in the semis.

Highland (4-0) was the first team  Wednesday to earn a semifinal berth. The Hawks beat Mountain Pointe, 2-0, to complete a sweep of their Pool C matches. Highland faces Pool D winner Desert Vista (6-0), a 2-0 winner over Basha, in the other semifinal Thursday at 6 p.m. The Gilbert-Corona winner faces the Highland-Desert Vista winner for the championship on Friday at 6 p.m.
