Ball security and complimentary football helped propel the undefeated Scottsdale prep Spartans to a victory on away turf against the Veritas Falcons 21 to 14.

Defensively, the Spartans intercepted Veritas quarterback Will Jakubczyk three times, but no pick was bigger than Carson Boyll’s interception in the end zone according to Spartans Coach David Primavera.

“Carson intercepted it and almost ran it back for a touchdown,” Primavera said. “He returned it back to the Veritas 25 yard line, and that helped set up our offense.”

With a defense that gave him plenty of extra opportunities to score, Oscar Frias made the most of his chances and made sure that the Spartans capitalized.

“Oscar was really smart with the football,” Primavera said. “He wasn’t on target all the time, but he put balls in places where the defense didn’t want to stop the ball. He also made some good decisions running with the ball rather than any loss or throwing a bubble screen.”

Primavera said the smart play of his quarterback allowed the Spartans to play complementary football, and take advantage of the Falcons missed opportunities.

“Oscar just made really, really good decisions out there,” Primavera said. “We put together a couple of long drives that took a lot of time off the clock. That allowed our defense to get some rest and then also off the field. So that really helped us with it with Oscar there.”

The Spartans kept their winning streak alive, and look to stay undefeated next week as they travel to North Pointe. Primavera said the Spartans need to focus on the fundamentals of the game and avoid little mistakes.

“What we're gonna be doing this week is really just focusing on the fundamentals,” Primavera said. “Really just learning to take care of the football, like we did against Veritas and keeping our heads down and focusing on the next week, is great. Going back to the fundamentals, solid tackling, good ball control, re-establish the run game, and hopefully, that'll carry us into the North Point we'll end up getting a win.”
